Haptodus Garnettensis
''"Haptodus" garnettensis'' is an extinct species of basal sphenacodont from the Late Carboniferous ( Pennsylvanian) of Kansas, USA. Taxonomy The holotype of ''"Haptodus" garnettensis'' is RM 14156, a partially articulated skeleton (cranial and postcranial) of immature individual. More than 16 well-preserved specimen of various ontological states were referred to this species. All specimens came from the Garnett Quarry, located in the Anderson County of Kansas. They were collected from the Rock Lake Member of the Stanton Formation (Lansing Group), dating to the late Kasimovian stage of the late Pennsylvanian series, about 304 million years old. Laurin (1993, 1994) suggested that ''Haptodus garnettensis'' would have to be renamed because he saw ''Haptodus baylei'' as a possible ''nomen dubium''. In his dissertation revising taxa assigned to ''Haptodus'', Spindler (2015) proposed that ''"Haptodus" garnettensis'' is not congeneric with the ''Haptodus'' type specie ... ''Kenomagnathus'' (meaning "gap jaw", in reference to the diastema in its upper tooth row) is a genus of synapsid belonging to the Sphenacodontia, which lived during the Pennsylvanian subperiod of the Carboniferous in what is now Garnett, Kansas, United States. It contains one species, ''Kenomagnathus scottae'', based on a specimen consisting of the maxilla and lacrimal bones of the skull, which was catalogued as ROM 43608 and originally classified as belonging to '' "Haptodus" garnettensis''. Frederik Spindler named it as a new genus in 2020. Discovery and naming Norman Newell discovered a fossil locality near Garnett, Kansas, United States in 1931, belonging to the Rock Lake Member of the Stanton Formation. ''Haptodus'' is an extinct genus of basal sphenacodont, member of the clade that includes therapsids and hence, mammals. It was at least in length. It lived in present-day France during the Early Permian. It was a medium-sized predator, feeding on insects and small vertebrates. Discovery and history ''Haptodus baylei'' ''Haptodus baylei'', the type species of ''Haptodus'', is known only from a single, badly preserved specimen hosted in the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle of Paris. Series are subdivisions of rock layers based on the age of the rock and formally defined by international conventions of the geological timescale. The Stanton Formation is a Formation (geology), geologic formation of limestone in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas. It preserves fossils dating back to the Carboniferous Period (geology), period. It is in the Upper Pennsylvanian series, forming the top of the Lansing Group. Location The Stanton Formation overlies and underlies the Vilas Shale and the Weston Shale Member of the Stranger Formation respectively. The Stanton Limestone outcrop is found between the Platte River Valley of eastern Nebraska to the Oklahoma border, traversing through Iowa, Missouri and eastern Kansas. Kansas
Kansas () is a state in the Midwestern United States. Its capital is Topeka, and its largest city is Wichita. Kansas is a landlocked state bordered by Nebraska to the north; Missouri to the east; Oklahoma to the south; and Colorado to the west.
