"Happy Birthday" is a song from American alternative rock band Concrete Blonde, which was released in 1989 as the second single from their second studio album ''Free''. The song was written and produced by the band. Music video The song's music video was directed by Jane Simpson. It was shot in an apartment in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. Concrete Blonde
Concrete Blonde was an American alternative rock band from Hollywood, California. They were initially active from 1982 to 1995, and reunited twice: first from 2001 to 2004, and again from 2010 to 2012. They were best known for their album ''Bloodletting'' (1990), its top 20 single "Joey", and Johnette Napolitano's distinctive vocal style. Career Singer-songwriter/bassist Johnette Napolitano first formed a group with guitarist James Mankey in Los Angeles, in 1982. Their first recording was the song "Heart Attack", released under the band name Dreamers on the compilation album, ''The D.I.Y. Album'' (1982). Joined by drummer Michael Murphy, they became Dream 6, releasing an eponymous extended play in on the independent label "Happy Hermit" in 1983 (released in France in 1985 by Madrigal). Johnette Napolitano
Johnette Napolitano (born Jonette L. Napolitano; September 22, 1957) is an American singer, songwriter and bassist best known as the lead vocalist, songwriter, and bassist for the alternative rock group Concrete Blonde. Early life Johnette Napolitano was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, the eldest of five children in an Italian American family. Her parents recognized their daughter possessed musical talent when, as a child, she was able to play " Somewhere Over the Rainbow" on piano by ear. Her mother loved show tunes. The family also listened to Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, and the Rat Pack. At age five she enrolled in a gifted kids art program at UCLA. Christopher Andrew Tsangarides (17 August 1956 – 6 January 2018) was a British Grammy-nominated record producer, sound engineer, and mixer of Greek Cypriot origin. He was best known for his work with many heavy metal artists, including Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Helloween, Anvil, Angra, Anthem, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Tygers of Pan Tang. Tsangarides worked with many pop and alternative artists as well, including Depeche Mode, Tom Jones, Concrete Blonde, and The Tragically Hip. Earle Mankey (sometimes misspelled "Earl" in credits) (born March 8, 1947, in Washington, United States) is an American musician, record producer and audio engineer. He was a founding member and guitarist for the band Halfnelson, later called Sparks. He became a record producer, predominantly for Los Angeles area bands like The Pop, 20/20, The Runaways, Concrete Blonde, Jumpin' Jimes, The Long Ryders, The Three O'Clock, The Tearaways, The Conditionz, Adicts, Durango 95,Leslie Pereira and The Lazy Heroes, and Kristian Hoffman. Harry Rushakoff
Harry Rushakoff (born November 16, 1958) is a former drummer for the band Concrete Blonde. He started his career in Chicago, playing with The Nodes and then with Special Affect (which featured Ministry's Al Jourgensen and My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult's Groovie Mann. Rushakoff also played in Chicago area band 4xy with bassist Chris Kirkendal, guitarist Eddie Yeo, and singer Aidan Mann. He worked with Jim Belushi when the actor used 4xy to record some demos and play live dates. Rushakoff also played with famed Chicago guitarist Harvey Mandel (known for his work with the Rolling Stones and Canned Heat). ''Free'' is the second album by alternative rock band Concrete Blonde. It marked the addition of bass player Alan Bloch. ''Free'' peaked at number 90 on the Australian ARIA Charts. Critical reception Chris Murray, reviewer of ''RPM (magazine), RPM'', considered that "this album has something to please everybody" and it "sounding better with each listen." In the end he expressed a hope that this LP "will eventually get the proper recognition." Tom Demalton of ''AllMusic'' gave a mostly positive review of ''Free'', proclaiming it a "worthwhile follow-up" showing "considerable amount of growth in both the songwriting and playing" since the debut album.
