Hans Rupe (art Historian)
Johan Hermann Wilhelm Rupe (October 9, 1866, in Basel – January 12, 1951) was a professor of organic chemistry at the University of Basel. His main field of interest was terpenes and campher as well as optical activity. Life Rupe was born on October 9, 1866, in Basel to Johannes Rupe and Mathilde Rupe (born Fischer) and went to school in Basel. He passed his Maturität in 1885 and then went on to study in Basel under Julius Piccard. He continued his studies at the University of Strasbourg under Rudolf Fittig and then in 1887 in Munich under Adolf von Baeyer. Rupe received his PhD in 1889 at Munich for his dissertation ''Über die Reduktionsprodukte der Dichloromuconsäure''. In 1894 he went to Mulhouse to become head of the "Chemieschule" in the organic division. Rupe habilitated in 1895 in Basel, where he moved in 1899. Eduard Hagenbach-Bischoff
Eduard Hagenbach-Bischoff (20 February 1833, in Basel – 23 December 1910, in Basel) was a Swiss physicist. The Hagenbach-Bischoff quota (a voting system) is named after him. The son of the theologian Karl Rudolf Hagenbach, he studied physics and mathematics in Basel (with Rudolf Merian), Berlin (with Heinrich Wilhelm Dove and Heinrich Gustav Magnus), Geneva, Paris (with Jules Célestin Jamin) and obtained his Ph.D. in 1855 at Basel. He taught at the ''Gewerbeschule'' (vocational school) in Basel and was after his habilitation, a professor of mathematics at the University of Basel for one year. From 1863 to 1906 he was a full professor of physics at Basel (successor of Gustav Heinrich Wiedemann). Friedrich Fichter
Friedrich Fichter (6 July 1869 – 1952) was a professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of Basel. His main field of interest was electrochemistry. He initiated the founding of the scientific journal ''Helvetica Chimica Acta''. Life Fichter was born on the July 6th, 1869 and attended the University of Basel from 1888 to 1890 and then the University of Strasbourg. He studied under Rudolf Fittig and become his assistant in 1893. He was awarded a PhD in 1894 and in 1896 he habilitated and became a "Privatdozent". In 1903 he became extraordinary professor and was promoted to ordinary professor in 1912 and head of the inorganic division (while his colleague Hans Rupe became professor for organic chemistry). Rudolf Nietzki
Rudolf Hugo Nietzki (9 March 1847 – 28 September 1917) was a German chemist who specialized in industrial dyes derived from coal tar. While a professor at the University of Basel in Switzerland he initiated the university's association with to the local chemical industry. Life Rudolf Hugo Nietzki was born on 9 March 1847 in Heilsberg, East Prussia (now Lidzbark Warmiński, Poland) to a Protestant family. His father was Carl Johann Emil Nietzki, a priest, rector and writer. He attended the Königsberg gymnasium (secondary school), which he left before graduating, then began training as a pharmacist. He studied pharmacy in Zinten (now Kornevo, Kaliningrad, Russia) and Kreuzburg, Silesia (now Kluczbork, Poland). In 1865 he qualified as an assistant.
