Hans Renders
Hans Renders is a professor of history and biography theory at the University of Groningen. Since 2004, he is also the head of the university's "Biography Institute". Career Currently, Renders is board member of the journals ''Le Temps des Médias; Quaerendo. A Quarterly Journal from the Low Countries'' and ''ZL. Literair-historisch tijdschrift''. From 2004 to 2015, he was a critic for ''OVT'', a radio program of Dutch public broadcasting channel VPRO. In addition, since 1988, he has been a critic for Dutch newspapers ''Het Parool'' and ''Vrij Nederland''. Furthermore, he supplied until 2017 reviews of biographies for ''Historisch Nieuwsblad'', chairs ''Biography Portal of the Netherlands'', is vice-president of ''The Biography Society/La Société de Biography'', and was from 2010 to 2018 a board member of ''Biographer's International Organization''. Jan Campert
Jan Remco Theodoor Campert ( Spijkenisse, 15 August 1902 – 12 January 1943) was a Dutch journalist, theater critic and writer who lived in Amsterdam. During the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II Campert was arrested for aiding Jews. He was held in the Neuengamme concentration camp, where he died. Campert is best known for his poem "" ("The Song of the Eighteen Dead"), describing the execution of 18 resistance workers (15 resistance fighters and three communists) by the German occupier. Jan Hanlo
Jan Hanlo, in full Johannes Bernardus Maria Raphael Hanlo (Bandung, Dutch East Indies, 29 May 1912 - Maastricht, Netherlands 16 June 1969) was a Dutch poet and writer. The son of a judge in the Dutch East Indies, Hanlo grew up with his mother, who was a Roman Catholic bigot, in Deurne, Netherlands, Deurne, later in Valkenburg aan de Geul, both in the south of the Netherlands. From 1942-1958 he lived in Amsterdam, where he grew to be interested in poetry and was associated with the experimental group of the Vijftigers, although he was an outsider in that group. In 1951 his first book op poems was published, ''The varnished - Het geverniste''. His most famous poem, 'Oote', meant as a rendering of children's speak in written sounds, was published in 1952. It resulted in a minor scandal, when it was read aloud in the Dutch parliament as an example of art that should not be subsidy, subsidized by the government. Willem Frederik Hermans
Willem Frederik Hermans (1 September 1921 – 27 April 1995) was a Dutch author of poetry, novels, short stories, plays, as well as book-length studies, essays, and literary criticism. His most famous works are ''The House of Refuge'' (novella, 1952), '' The Darkroom of Damocles'' (novel, 1958), and ''Beyond Sleep'' (novel, 1966). After World War II, Hermans tried to live off his writing exclusively, but as his country was recovering from the Occupation, he had no opportunity to sustain himself. He published three collections of short stories from 1948 to 1957, chief among them the novella ''The House of Refuge'' (1952), and in 1958 became lecturer in physical geography at Groningen University, a position he retained until his move to Paris, France, in 1973. Nigel Hamilton (born 16 February 1944) is a British-born biographer, academic, and broadcaster, whose works have been translated into sixteen languages. Theo Van Doesburg
Theo van Doesburg (, 30 August 1883 – 7 March 1931) was a Dutch artist, who practiced painting, writing, poetry and architecture. He is best known as the founder and leader of De Stijl. He was married to artist, pianist and choreographer Nelly van Doesburg. Early life Theo van Doesburg was born Christian Emil Marie Küpper on 30 August 1883, in Utrecht, Netherlands, as the son of the photographer and Henrietta Catherina Margadant. After a short period of training in acting and singing, he decided to become a storekeeper.
