Hannibal Ford
Hannibal Choate Ford (1877–1955) was an American inventor and electrical engineer best known for his work during the first half of the 20th century. Biography Hannibal C. Ford was born in Dryden, New York on May 8, 1877, to Susan Augusta Giles and Abram Millard Ford, the publisher and editor of the weekly ''Dryden Herald''. He graduated with a B.S. in electrical engineering from Cornell University in 1903. While there he worked in the Sibley College electrical engineering laboratory. Ford began working for Elmer Ambrose Sperry’s Sperry Gyroscope Company in 1909, where he quickly became chief engineer and helped turn the gyrocompass into a military-grade product. He left Sperry in 1915 to launch what would become the Ford Instrument Company. Dryden, New York
Dryden is a town in Tompkins County, New York, United States. The population was 14,435 at the 2010 census. The town administers an area that includes two villages, one also named Dryden and one named Freeville, as well as a number of hamlets. The town is on the county's eastern border, east of Ithaca, in the Finger Lakes region. Rangekeepers were electromechanical fire control computers used primarily during the early part of the 20th century. They were sophisticated analog computers whose development reached its zenith following World War II, specifically the Computer Mk 47 in the Mk 68 Gun Fire Control system. During World War II, rangekeepers directed gunfire on land, sea, and in the air. While rangekeepers were widely deployed, the most sophisticated rangekeepers were mounted on warships to direct the fire of long-range guns.Technically, it would be more accurate to use the term "rifle" for long-range ship-board cannon.
