Alf Hannaford
Alfred Hannaford (1890 – 25 August 1969) was a South Australian inventor and industrialist, remembered for his wheat pickling machines. History Alfred Hannaford was a son of John (17 February 1849 – 25 May 1909) and Elizabeth Hannaford, née Shearer (1852 – c. 6 November 1924), and lived at "Wattle Vale" farm near Riverton, South Australia; she moved to 57 Fourth Avenue St Peters, South Australia, St. Peters before 1924. Her family relationship with J. & D. Shearer, if any, has not yet been determined. He was educated at Riverton Public School then worked on the family farm. Some time before 1915 he developed a wheat pickling machine, which found considerable acceptance among practical farmers. The machine was capable of treating eight to twelve bags of wheat with Copper(II) sulfate, bluestone (copper sulphate) solution and separating smut (fungus), smut and other contamination from whole grain prior to planting. Robert Lyall "Alfie" Hannaford , (born 9 November 1944) is an Australian realist artist notable for his drawings, paintings, portraits and sculptures. He is a great-great-great-grandson of Susannah Hannaford. Family Hannaford was born and grew up on his family's farm in the Gilbert Valley near Riverton, South Australia, attending Riverton Primary and High Schools. Rose Parakeet
The Rose Parrakeet was a single-seat sporting biplane produced in small numbers in the United States during the 1930s. It was a conventional design with staggered single-bay wings of equal span braced by N-struts. The cockpit was open, and the fixed tailskid undercarriage had divided main units. An unusual feature was the use of a single strut in place of the usual flying wires. Development Only eight Parrakeets were built by Rose, but the design proved a popular one with homebuilders in the 1950s. Rights to produce kits of the Parrakeet were purchased by Hannaford Aircraft in 1948, and the design was marketed as the Hannaford Bee with structural modifications to strengthen weak points. Kits were marketed right up to the point of Hannaford founder Foster Hannaford's death in 1971, and plans continued to be sold into the 1980s. Samuel Hannaford (10 April 1835 – 7 January 1911) was an American architect based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Some of the best known landmarks in the city, such as Music Hall and City Hall, were of his design. The bulk of Hannaford's work was done locally, over 300 buildings, but his residential designs appear through New England to the Midwest and the South. Biography Born in England, Hannaford immigrated with his family to Cincinnati at age nine. Hannaford attended public schools and graduated from Farmer's College, Cincinnati, where he studied architecture. Hannaford opened an office in 1857 and in 1887 formed the firm of Samuel Hannaford & Sons. At the time of his death, he was director of the Ohio Mechanics' Institute. Hannaford is an American supermarket chain based in Scarborough, Maine. Founded in Portland, Maine, in 1883, Hannaford operates stores in New England and New York. Walter Hannaford
Walter Hannaford (20 May 1868 – 29 June 1942) was a farmer and politician in South Australia. History Walter Hannaford was born in Riverton, South Australia, a son of John Elliott Hannaford (ca.1834 – 1 November 1900) and his wife Selina S. Hannaford née Sambell (ca.1833 – 19 September 1918). Walter was educated at the local school and at Thomas Caterer's College at Semaphore. As a young man he had a financial interest in a Queensland grazing property, and he took a keen interest in local government there, as well as in the Riverton district, where he was for some time chairman of the District Council of Gilbert. He took over his father's Riverton property "Broad Oak" around 1898 when his father retired to Medindie and continued to operate the farm. Susannah Hannaford, ''née'' Elliott (25 December 1790 – 7 April 1861) was an early immigrant to South Australia. History Susannah and her husband William Hannaford (28 April 1797 – 1838) lived in Rattery, Devon and brought up a large family. After the death of her husband Susannah liquidated all their assets and boarded the ''Brightman'' to emigrate to South Australia, landing in December 1840. The children who made the journey were Richard (19), George (18), Elizabeth (12), Frederick (11), and John (6). Son William arrived in Sydney in 1844 with his wife Harriett nee Toms. Long before any port facilities, they were obliged to wade ashore, Richard carrying his mother on his shoulders.
