Handweavers Guild Of America
The Handweavers Guild of America (HGA) is an association of fiber artists founded in the U.S. in 1969. The guild provides educational programs, conferences, and scholarships for fiber arts students. It publishes the quarterly journal ''Shuttle Spindle & Dyepot''. Foundation The Handweavers Guild of America (HGA) was founded in 1969. The well-known New York weaver Berta Frey was one of the founders and served on the guild's first board of directors. The objective is "to inspire creativity and encourage excellence in the fiber arts." The organization is non-profit and has an international membership. Members include weavers, spinners, dyers, basketmakers, fiber artists and teachers. As of 2006 the guild was based in Atlanta, Georgia. Suwanee, Georgia
Suwanee is a city in Gwinnett County and a northeastern suburb of Atlanta in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,355; this had grown to an estimated 20,907 as of 2019. History Early history Suwanee, as did most towns in Georgia, started out as a Native American village. It was built on the Chattahoochee River, where societies flourished. The city of Suwanee itself was established and officially recognized by the U.S. government in 1837 upon the erection of a post office. In 1871, the Georgia Air Line Railroad was built through Suwanee, and in 1880 the Rhodes House hotel was built to house passengers of the railroad. Berta Frey
Berta Frey (8 November 1893 – 1 February 1972) was a well-known New York weaver, who spoke and taught about weaving techniques for many years. She was one of the founders of the Handweavers Guild of America. Early years Berta Frey was born on 8 November 1893 in Texas. During World War I (1914–18) she was an occupational therapist specializing in woodworking in the army's Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. She learned handweaving at this time. When she found that no handlooms were being made in the USA she used her woodworking skills to make looms for her patients and then for herself. Frey began by following Colonial weaving designs, but soon started to experiment with other patterns. Inter-war period After the war Frey moved to New York City with her parents, and worked in the textile industry. She eventually opened a design studio in the city and began to teach weaving there. Craft Ontario, legally known as the Ontario Crafts Council (OCC), is a member-based, Nonprofit organization, not-for-profit arts service organization based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
