is a junction railway station in the city of Hanamaki, Iwate, Japan, operated by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). Lines Hanamaki Station is served by the Tōhoku Main Line and the Kamaishi Line. It is located 500.0 kilometers from the starting point of the Tōhoku Main Line at Tokyo Station, and is a terminus for the Kamaishi Line. Hanamaki Station is not a stop of the Tōhoku Shinkansen. Island Platform
An island platform (also center platform, centre platform) is a station layout arrangement where a single platform is positioned between two tracks within a railway station, tram stop or transitway interchange. Island platforms are popular on twin-track routes due to pragmatic and cost reasons. They are also useful within larger stations where local and express services for the same direction of travel can be provided from opposite sides of the same platform thereby simplifying transfers between the two tracks. An alternative arrangement is to position side platforms on either side of the tracks. The historical use of island platforms depends greatly upon the location. Kitakami River
The is the fourth largest river in Japan and the largest in the Tōhoku region. It is long and drains an area of . page 793 It flows through mostly rural areas of Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures. The source of the river is the Mount Nanashiruge in northern Iwate, from which it flows to the south between the Kitakami Mountains and the Ōu Mountains. The river is unusual in that it has two mouths, one flowing south into Ishinomaki Bay and the other flowing east into the Pacific Ocean, both in Ishinomaki City. The Kitakami river was an important transportation route during the Edo period and before the building of railways in the early Meiji period. A station having dual side platforms, one for each direction of travel, is the basic design used for double-track railway lines (as opposed to, for instance, the island platform where a single platform lies between the tracks).
