Han Park
Han Park is a professor at the University of Georgia in the United States. He has acted as an unofficial negotiator between the United States and North Korea. He was born in the Republic of China in an area now controlled by the People's Republic of China. His parents were Korean. He has a Seoul National University B.A., an American University M.A., a University of Minnesota Ph.D. He is Director of the Center for the Study of Global Issues (GLOBIS) at the University of Georgia. He negotiated for the release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee, two American citizens who crossed the border (according to their confession) to do a news story about North Korea. They were accompanied by a camera man and Korean guide but both men were able to run away faster when the North Koreans tried to arrest the four. Laura Ling
Laura Ling (born December 1, 1976) is an American journalist and writer. She worked for Current TV as a correspondent and vice president of its Vanguard Journalism Unit, which produced the ''Vanguard'' TV series. She was the host and reporter on ''E! Investigates'', a documentary series on the E! Network. In November 2014, Ling joined Discovery Digital Networks as its Director of Development. In 2009, Ling and fellow journalist Euna Lee were detained in North Korea after they started filming refugees from the country who had crossed the river and entered China. Many of these refugees were women, and once across the border, they were often sold as brides. Ling said that the North Korean guards dragged her across the border. North Korea–United States Relations
Relations between North Korea and the United States have been historically tense and hostile, as both countries have no diplomatic relations. The Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang is the U.S. protecting power and provides limited consular services to U.S. citizens. The DPRK has no embassy in Washington, DC, but is represented in the United States through its mission to the United Nations in New York. Euna Lee
Euna Lee (Hangul:유나 리; born 1972) is a Korean American journalist. While working for Current TV, Lee and fellow journalist Laura Ling were detained in North Korea after they crossed into the Democratic People's Republic of Korea from the People's Republic of China without a visa. They were found guilty of illegal entry and sentenced to twelve years' hard labor in June 2009. The United States Government protested the sentences, and implemented diplomatic efforts in order to secure the release of both Lee and Ling.
