Hampton Road
Hampton Road is the main road entering the Fremantle, Western Australia, City of Fremantle from the south. It is named after John Stephen Hampton, the Governor of Western Australia from 1862 to 1868. It continues into Ord Street, Fremantle, Ord Street at the north east corner of Fremantle Prison at Knutsford Street. Heritage buildings and operations in historical properties occur along the length of the road; they include the Fremantle Children's Literature Centre, Hampton Road reserve, Bundi Kudja, and St Pauls Anglican Church in Beaconsfield. Fremantle Hospital
Fremantle Hospital is an Australian public hospital situated on South Terrace in central Fremantle, southwest of Perth, Western Australia. It was formerly the major hospital in its region; however, with the opening of Fiona Stanley Hospital in Murdoch on 3 February 2015, it was substantially downsized, with the closure of its emergency department and a range of other services being relocated to the new hospital. Location The main facility of Fremantle hospital is a historic site and looks out over the nearby fishing boat harbour, the Port of Fremantle and the Indian Ocean. Henderson is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn. History The suburb of Henderson comprises land resumed by the Commonwealth Government in 1915 for defence purposes. A large naval base was planned by Admiral Sir Reginald Henderson, and the area was sometimes referred to as "Henderson Naval Base". The name was approved for the suburb in 1973. In 2019, the City of Cockburn approved a split of the neighbouring suburb Munster, whereby the north-western part of the suburb would become the new suburb of Lake Coogee while another part, in the south-west, would be added to Henderson. The changes came into effect on 30 March 2020, thereby enlarging the suburb of Henderson. Coogee, Western Australia
Coogee is a southern coastal suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn. History The suburb takes its name from the lake, Lake Coogee, in the area, which translates to "Body of water" in the native Aboriginal Nyoongar language. Originally this lake was named Lake Munster after Prince William, the Earl of Munster, and later King William IV. The Aboriginal name ''Kou-gee'' was recorded in 1841 by Thomas Watson and has been variously spelt ''Koojee, Coojee'' and ''Coogee''. The first European settlement in the region occurred with the ill-fated settlement by Thomas Peel at the Clarence townsite behind Woodman Point in 1829, the townsite being abandoned in 1831. Hamilton Hill, Western Australia
Hamilton Hill is a suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, located southwest the central business district. Its local government area is the City of Cockburn. History The earliest known settler at Hamilton Hill was Sydney Smith, the agent of Captain George Robb. Robb arrived in Western Australia in 1830 and took up land south of Fremantle. During the next twelve months Smith was actively engaged in establishing Robb's farm. In a letter dated 27 August 1830, he gives his address as Hamilton Hill. The origin of the name, and whether it was Robb or Smith who did the naming, remains uncertain but the area has been known as such ever since. In 1860 Charles Alexander Manning bought of Robb's land, and six years later built Davilak House for his son Lucius Manning. The house of twelve rooms, was built using convict labour and was owned by the Manning family until they abandoned it in the late 1950s. City Of Cockburn
The City of Cockburn ( ) is a local government area in the southern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth about south of Fremantle and about south of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of and had a population of over 104,000 as at the 2016 Census. History Cockburn is named after Cockburn Sound, which was named in 1827 by Captain James Stirling after Admiral Sir George Cockburn. Sir George was born in London in 1772 and was a renowned British naval officer, eventually becoming Admiral of the Fleet and First Sea Lord. He served under Horatio Nelson during the war with France, but came to public attention and was granted his knighthood for his service in the War of 1812, in particular for the burning of Washington in 1814. The City of Fremantle is a local government area in the south of Perth, Western Australia. The City covers an area of , and lies about southwest of the Perth central business district. History The City of Fremantle is named after Charles Fremantle, who in 1829 claimed for George IV "all that part of New Holland (Australia) which is not included within the territory of New South Wales", but who was also charged just three years earlier in April 1826 with raping a 15-year-old girl. In 1848 a town trust was formed comprising a chairman and a committee of five. For the next twenty-three years they set about constructing roads and many public buildings with the use of convict labour. By 1870 the population of Fremantle had reached 3,796 and it was a moderately flourishing town, resulting in a move among the colonists to secure greater control of the management of their affairs. Marine Terrace, Fremantle
Marine Terrace is a road on the southern side of the built up area of Fremantle, Western Australia. It is named for its location alongside the water front. At various stages in its history it has had significant processions along the terrace. The trees that currently line the terrace are not found in early photographs. In 1896 a quarantine station was set up at South Beach, at the end of the road, to process camels shipped in to Western Australia. The camels would arrive at the Long Jetty, be driven along Marine Terrace, and then made to camp at the quarantine site. The animals would later be taken to the Goldfields. It is bound by Esplanade Park on its west side and has the Esplanade Hotel on the east side, along with a number of other heritage listed buildings.
