Hamilton Incline Railway
The Mount Hamilton Railway was a funicular railway in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, climbing the Niagara Escarpment. It opened August 26, 1895 in Hamilton, Ontario. The site was on the concession road which became Wentworth Street, climbing the Niagara Escarpment, though it remains impassible to this day. In 1906 a new owner renamed it Wentworth Street Incline Railway. The system has two tracks with two car operation with second generation cars used after 1910. The original cars were wood. The cars were quite wide (20.5 feet by 30 feet), so that small streetcars could have been carried, but this was never followed through. A number of structures were associated with the incline. The Superintendent's home and Ticket Office were at the lower level. Hamilton is a port city in the Canadian province of Ontario. Hamilton has a population of 569,353, and its census metropolitan area, which includes Burlington and Grimsby, has a population of 785,184. Niagara Escarpment
The Niagara Escarpment is a long escarpment, or cuesta, in Canada and the United States that runs predominantly east–west from New York through Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin, and into Illinois. The escarpment is most famous as the cliff over which the Niagara River plunges at Niagara Falls, for which it is named. The escarpment is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. The reserve has the oldest forest ecosystem and trees in eastern North America. The escarpment is not a fault line but the result of unequal erosion.
