Hamid Khan (badminton)
Abdul Hamid Khan (born 13 December 1965) is a Singaporean former badminton player. He is a one-time Olympian and a seven-time national champion. Career Hamid entered the national squad in 1985. Then, he was just 19 and had won his first national champion men's singles title. He went on to win another six more until 1995. He also represented Singapore to compete in two events at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Hamid retired at the age of 30. He turned to coaching and also served as the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA)’s director of coaching for two years starting in 2000. He is currently the Deputy President of SBA. Personal life Hamid married his long-time girlfriend Murni in April 1993. They have two sons, Irsyad and Imran, and a daughter, Nur Insyirah. Badminton
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side). Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. Play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor or if a fault has been called by the umpire, service judge, or (in their absence) the opposing side. The shuttlecock is a feathered or (in informal matches) plastic projectile which flies differently from the balls used in many other sports. Singapore Badminton Association (abbreviation: SBA) is the national governing body for badminton in Singapore. It governs, encourages and develops the sport throughout the country. Founded in 1929, the SBA is an affiliate of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC). It is also a member of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and Badminton Asia, which was formerly known as the Badminton Asian Confederation. Badminton had its debut as an official medal sport at the 1992 Summer Olympics. It was held from 28 July to 4 August 1992. Four events were held in the first competition of the sport: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, and women's doubles. Badminton was contested in the Pavelló de la Mar Bella. 36 nations entered competitors, with a total of 177 entrants. Asian nations won fifteen of the sixteen medals, with their dominance being broken only by Denmark's bronze medal in the men's singles. The tournament was single-elimination.
