Hambleton District
Hambleton is a local government district in North Yorkshire, England. The administrative centre is Northallerton, and the district includes the outlying towns and villages of Bedale, Thirsk, Great Ayton, Stokesley, and Easingwold. The district was formed by the Local Government Act 1972 on 1 April 1974, as a merger of Northallerton Urban District, Bedale Rural District, Easingwold Rural District, Northallerton Rural District, and parts of Thirsk Rural District, Stokesley Rural District and Croft Rural District, all in the North Riding of Yorkshire. Geography Hambleton covers an area of 1,311.17 km² most of which, 1,254.90 km², is green space. The district is named after the Hambleton Hills, part of the North York Moors National Park, on the eastern edge of the district. Samuel Hambleton (January 8, 1812 – December 9, 1886) was an American politician from Maryland. He served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, representing Talbot County from 1834 to 1835 and in 1854. He also served in the Maryland Senate in 1844. He served as a U.S. Representative from Maryland from 1869 to 1873. Samuel Hambleton (1777 – 1851) was an officer in the United States Navy who served with distinction during the War of 1812. Early life Samuel Hambleton was born in 1777 in Talbot County, Maryland at "Martingham", an estate granted to his great-great-grandfather, William Hambleton, by Lord Baltimore in 1657. Iceal E. "Gene" Hambleton (November 16, 1918 – September 19, 2004) was a United States Air Force navigator who was shot down over South Vietnam during the 1972 Easter Offensive. He was aboard an EB-66 aircraft whose call sign was Bat 21. As the ranking navigator/EWO on the aircraft, he was seated immediately behind the pilot, giving him the call sign "Bat 21 Bravo". He survived for days behind enemy lines until he was retrieved in a ground operation. His rescue was the longest and most costly search and rescue mission during the Vietnam War.
