Halmtorvet (English language, English: The Haymarket) is a town square, public square in the Vesterbro, Copenhagen, Vesterbro district of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is located next to Copenhagen Central Station in front of the Kødbyen, Meat District. The oblong square eventually turns into Sønder Boulevard, a broad street with a park strip in its central reserve, which continues to Enghavevej at Enghave station. History Copenhagen's haymarket was originally located just inside the Western City Gate where the City Hall Square, Copenhagen, City Hall Square lies today. It closed on 1 January 1888 and relocated to the area outside the new Kødbyen, Livestock Market which had opened at the site in 1879. Market days were Wednesday and Saturday and up to several hundred loads of hay and straw were traded and distributed to cattle and horse stables around the city. Husets Teater
Husets Teater is a studio theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark. It takes its name from the Huset cultural centre in the city centre, where it was founded in 1975, but has since 1995 been based at Halmtorvet in a building which is part of the Kødbyen district. Hvide Kødby - Biomio
Hvide (English: ''Whites'') was a medieval Danish clan, and afterwards in early modern era a Danish noble surname of presumably one surviving branch of leaders of that clan. Before the 16th century it was not used as a surname. It signified the color white. Medieval Hvide clan The Hvide were influential in the Danish island of Zealand, and occasionally in other close parts of the country, such as other Danish islands and Skåne. They had a stronghold in Jørlunde. A folktale of the clan name contrasts this clan against the "black" clan of Viking leaders of Skåne (that then belonged to Denmark but now belongs to Sweden) ("Svarte Skåning") who had Thor as their chief god. Alfred Benzon A/S was a wholesaler of chemicals based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Its former headquarters at Halmtorvet 29 in Vesterbro was converted into apartments in 2008. History The company was founded by Alfred Benzon (1823–1884) on 1 January 1849, when he acquired the pharmacy Svane Apotek on Østergade in Copenhagen and in the same time established a wholesaling business. In 1863 he established a chemical factory at Kalvebod Beach. In 1877 he established Teknisk Materialhandel at Ny Østergade 4. After Alfred Benzon's death in 1884, his company was passed on to his sons Alfred Benzon (1855–1932) and Otto Benzon (1856–1927). Ludvig Fenger
Ludvig Peter Fenger (7 July 1833 – 9 March 1905) was a Danish architect. He was a proponent of the Historicist style, and from 1886 to 1904 he held the title of City Architect in Copenhagen. Among his works are several churches, the Central Fire Station and Vestre Prison in Copenhagen. He also directed the renovations of Church of Holmen and Christian IV's Stock Exchange. Early life and education Ludvig Fenger was born on 7 July 1833 in the village of Slots Bjergby outside Slagelse as the son of the local pastor. After graduating from Slagelse Latin School he attended the Royal Danish Academy while also working for architects such as Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll, Christian Hansen and Ferdinand Meldahl. He received the Academy's Large Gold Medal in 1866 and went on several journeys abroad from 1867 to 1869. Entrance to Øksnehallen Øksnehallen is an exhibition space located on Halmtorvet in the Vesterbro district of Copenhagen, Denmark. The building is a former market hall, part of the Brown Meat District. History The Cattle Market opened on 28 November 1879. Øksnehallen was built in 1891 to a design by city architect Ludvig Fenger. It housed dealers' offices and had a capacity for 1600 head of cattle. The market hall remained in use until the White Meat Market was inaugurated in the 1959s. Øksnehallen was converted into an exhibition space in connection with Copenhagen's status as European Capital of Culture in 1996. It has been operated by DGI-byen since September 2005. Current use Øksnehallen is used for a wide array of events, including art exhibitions, flea markets, conferences and fashion shows.
