Jean-Edern Hallier
Jean-Edern Hallier (1 March 193612 January 1997) was a French writer, critic and editor. After his exclusion from the literary review ''Tel Quel'', which he co-founded with Philippe Sollers, Hallier went on to publish novels and satirical pamphlets, and created the controversial newspaper ''L'Idiot International.'' Overview The son of World War I French General André Hallier, Jean Hallier was born in 1936. While the Hallier family has ancient Breton roots on his father's side, he later claimed in his novel ''L'évangile du fou'' (1986) that his mother had Alsatian and Jewish heritage. He was baptised in the village of Edern, whose name he later added to his first name Jean. Hallier, returning to France after World War II, first studied at the Pierre-qui-vire convent and then at a Paris lycée and at the University of Oxford . Johannes Gottfried Hallier
Johannes (Hans) Gottfried Hallier (6 July 1868 – 10 March 1932) was a German botanist born in Jena. He studied botany and zoology at the University of Jena under Christian Ernst Stahl (1848–1919) and Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919), and continued his studies at the University of Munich under Ludwig Adolph Timotheus Radlkofer, Ludwig Radlkofer (1829–1927) and Richard Hertwig (1850–1937). From 1893 until 1897, he was based at the Buitenzorg Botanical Garden in Java. In 1894, Hallier became the second European to climb Mount Kelam (after a certain Dr. Gürtler) and the first to collect specimens of the pitcher plant ''Nepenthes clipeata''.McPherson SR (2009). Ernst Hallier
Ernst Hallier (15 November 1831, in Hamburg – 19 December 1904, in Dachau) was a German botanist and mycologist. As a young man he was trained as a gardener, later studying botany at the universities of Berlin, Jena and Göttingen. From 1858 he served as an instructor at the Pharmaceutical Institute in Jena, where in 1860 he obtained his habilitation. In 1865 he became an associate professor, resigning his professorship 19 years later (1884). Hallier claimed that many diseases were caused by fungi including cholera, typhoid and measles. He claimed that he had extracted the causal fungi from patients but other scientists found that this was merely a case of external contamination. His work was subsequently largely discredited after it was criticized by Heinrich Anton de Bary. In 1869 he founded the journal ''Zeitschrift für Parasitenkunde.''
