Hallett Cove Railway Station
Hallett Cove railway station is located on the Seaford line. Situated in the southern Adelaide suburb of Hallett Cove , it is 21.4 kilometres from Adelaide station. History A station opened in 1915 as Hallett's Cove as part of the former Willunga line. It was closed to freight in 1962, and was renamed Hallett Cove in 1965. In the early years of the line, it had a stone-loading plant, traces of which may still be seen. That station was about a kilometre east of the present Hallett Cove station. Hallett Cove, South Australia
Hallett Cove is a coastal suburb of Adelaide, South Australia located in the City of Marion south of the Adelaide city centre. It has a population of more than 12,000 people. Adjoining suburbs are Marino to the north, Trott Park and Sheidow Park to the east and Lonsdale to the south. The name Kareildung has been mistakenly ascribed to Hallett Cove as an Indigenous name. The Kaurna name of Murrkangga was derived from the meaning of Kareildung and applied specifically to the Amphitheatre in the Hallett Cove Conservation Park. Sites within the conservation park are of great geological and archaeological significance, as well as containing sites of great cultural significance to the Kaurna people, including a significant site on the Tjilbruke Dreaming Track. Adelaide Metro is the public transport system of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It is an intermodal system offering an integrated network of bus, tram, and train service throughout the metropolitan area. The network has an annual patronage of 79.9 million, of which 51 million journeys are by bus, 15.6 million by train, and 9.4 million by tram. Seaford Railway Line
The Seaford railway line is a suburban commuter line in Adelaide, South Australia. History Before the extension of the line to Noarlunga Centre in 1978, the Willunga line ran from Hallett Cove station on a different route through Reynella, Morphett Vale and Hackham to Willunga (south-east of Noarlunga). It closed in 1969 and in September 1972 a track-removal train removed the tracks, and for six years Noarlunga had no train service. The South Australian Railways and its successor, the State Transport Authority, extended the current railway southwards in stages from Hallett Cove to cater for increasing residential development in the southern area. Adelaide Railway Station
Adelaide Railway Station is the central terminus of the Adelaide Metro railway system. All lines approach the station from the west, and it is a terminal station with no through lines, with most of the traffic on the metropolitan network either departing or terminating here. It has nine platforms, all using broad gauge track. It is located on the north side of North Terrace, west of Parliament House. The Adelaide Casino occupies part of the building that is no longer required for railway use. Willunga Railway Line
The Willunga railway line ran through the southern Adelaide suburbs from Adelaide railway station to Willunga, South Australia, Willunga, over long (longer than the current Gawler railway line, Gawler line, ). The line was opened in Willunga by the Governor of South Australia Henry Galway, Sir Henry Galway on 20 January 1915, and initially had 16 stopping places between Adelaide and Willunga. It closed beyond Hallett Cove railway station, Hallett Cove in 1969 and was dismantled in 1972. The Seaford railway line continues from Hallett Cove along a different alignment before rejoining the route of the old line between Seaford Road and Griffiths Drive. Port Stanvac Refinery
Port Stanvac Refinery was an oil refinery in the Australian state of South Australia located in Lonsdale, a southern suburb of Adelaide. Its construction was announced in 1958 and began refining crude oil in 1963. It had a capacity of 3.3 million tons per annum and was owned by ExxonMobil Australia (and previously Mobil). The refinery was mothballed in 2003, and in 2009 ExxonMobil announced its permanent closure and demolition. The site is being demolished and cleaned up through 2019. The refinery's most prominent structure, the chimney, was demolished on 31 January 2014. Mobil will face penalties if the site is not remediated by 2019. The land will be sold in phases.
