Hallberg-Rassy Varvsaktiebolag (HR) is a Swedish shipyard internationally known for producing high quality blue water sailing yachts. The company's yard is located in Ellös on the island of Orust, Västra Götaland. History Harry Hallberg founded his yard in 1943, and in 1965 Christoph Rassy founded a yard, in premises recently vacated by Hallberg. Harry Hallberg’s most distinguished contribution was his understanding of the advantages of using GRP and to build boats in a series. Hallberg-Rassy was formed when Rassy purchased the Hallberg yard after Harry Halberg's retirement in 1972. Since 1989 all boats have been designed by the Argentinian engineer and yacht designer Germán Frers. To date, more than 9,400 yachts have been completed by the yard. Germán Frers, Sr. (born July 4, 1941, in Argentina) is a naval architect renowned for designing successful racing yachts. He designed his first yacht in 1958. There is a design team consisting of Germán Frers and his son Germán Frers, Jr., supported by a team of engineers, architects and designers, some of whom have been with the company for more than 25 years. The company has designed more than 1,000 yachts. The designs range from exotic super yachts to no-nonsense racing hulls. The Hallberg-Rassy 40 is a Swedish sailboat, that was designed by Germán Frers and first built in 2002. The yacht is a high quality blue water cruiser capable of extended ocean passages. The design is built by Hallberg-Rassy in Sweden and the Mark II version ceased production in 2018. Design The Hallberg-Rassy 40 is a recreational centre-cockpit keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim. The Hallberg-Rassy Monsun 31 is a Swedish sailboat designed by Olle Enderlein in GRP and built between 1974 and 1982. The yacht is known for its traditional long keel, high build quality and sleek lines as a blue water cruiser. It is the best selling Hallberg-Rassy sailing boat to date with 904 hulls built. Design The Monsun is a Bermudan rigged masthead sloop with an aft cockpit and a mahogany interior. The design was based on Hallberg-Rassy's larger sister model, Rasmus 35, and was one of the first models to use Hallberg-Rassy's signature windscreen, which was innovative at the time.
