Francis Richard Hall
Francis Richard Hall (9 February 1862 – 18 March 1939) was an architect in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Many of his works are listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Early life Francis Hall was born on 9 February 1862 in Brisbane, the son of architect John Richard Hall and his wife Philadelphia (née Starr). He attended school in Brisbane and Maryborough before winning a scholarship in 1875 to attend Brisbane Grammar School. His half-brother, Thomas Ramsay Hall also trained as an architect. Career He commenced his architectural career in 1896 when he joined his father's practice which was then renamed Hall & Son. After his father's death in 1883, he became head of the practice. From 1896 to 1913, he worked in partnership with Robert Smith (Robin) Dods as Hall & Dods. From 1923 to 1927, he was in partnership with Alan Devereux as Hall & Devereux. Robin Dods
Robert Smith (Robin) Dods (9 June 1868 – 23 July 1920) was a New Zealand-born Australian architect. Personal life Dods was born in Dunedin, New Zealand on 9 June 1868. His parents were Robert Smith Dods (a wholesale grocer) and Elizabeth Gray, née Stodart. His parents both came from Edinburgh, Scotland. However, the family did not stay long in New Zealand and returned to Edinburgh in the early 1870s, where his father died in 1876. His mother Elizabeth then immigrated to Brisbane. On the voyage she met Charles Ferdinand Marks, Charles Ferdinard Marks, a physician, whom she married in Brisbane in 1879. Dods was educated at Brisbane Grammar School. He died at Edgecliff, New South Wales, Edgecliff, Sydney on 23 July 1920. He was the brother of solicitor Stodart Dods and Queensland Medical Officer Espie Dods. Australian Mercantile Land & Finance Woolstores is a heritage-listed former warehouse now apartments at 34 Vernon Terrace, Teneriffe, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Designed by Robin Dods of Hall and Dods, the first woolstore was built in 1912 by Walls & Juster and the second was built in 1922. They were added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History Australian Mercantile Land & Finance (AML&F), an English-Australian company incorporated in 1863, had offices in London, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane by 1910 when its Vernon Terrace land was purchased. The company employed leading architect Robin Dods and builders Walls & Juster to create an elegant but functional woolstore during 1912, thereby taking advantage of the 1910s boom in wool. The original Hall & Dods architectural plans included a second store, which was built in about 1922 to cope with the subsequent boom of the 1920s. Mount Carmel Convent
Mount Carmel Convent is a heritage-listed Roman Catholic former convent at 199 Bay Terrace, Wynnum, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Hall & Dods and built in 1915 by William Richard Juster. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 27 August 1999. The building operated as a convent from 1915 until 2011 and has subsequently been sold and renovated as a residence with bed-and-breakfast accommodation. History Mt Carmel Convent, a substantial two storey brick building with surrounding verandahs, was constructed in 1915 as a convent for the Sisters of Mercy. It was designed by the architectural partnership of Hall and Dods and constructed by William Richard Juster at a cost of .
