The People's Assembly of Gagauzia (''Gagauziyanin Halk Topluşu'', ''Народное Собрание Гагаузии'') is the representative and legislative body of the Gagauzia, an autonomous territorial unit of Moldova. Composition The People's Assembly consists of 35 deputies, elected for a term of four years, in single-mandate territorial constituencies, on the basis of universal, equal and direct suffrage with secret and free voting. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. Stepan Esir
Stepan ( uk, Степань; pl, Stepań; he, סטפאן) is an urban-type settlement in Sarny Raion (district) of Rivne Oblast (province) in western Ukraine. Its population was 4,073 as of the 2001 Ukrainian Census. Current population: The settlement is located in the historic Volhynia region of Ukraine, on the left bank of the Horyn, a tributary of the Prypiat. History The first written mention of Stepan dates back to 1290. In 1900, the Jewish population of Stepan totaled 1,854. During the World War II occupation of Ukraine, the Nazi German occupying forces established a Jewish ghetto, where nearly 3000 Jews were killed. Gagauz People
The Gagauz ( gag, Gagauzlar) are a Turkic people living mostly in southern Moldova ( Gagauzia, Taraclia District, Basarabeasca District) and southwestern Ukraine (Budjak). Gagauz are mostly Eastern Orthodox Christians. The term Gagauz is also often used as a collective naming of Turkic people living in the Balkans, speaking Gagauz language, a language separated from Balkan Gagauz Turkish. Etymology ''Gagauz'' is the most widely accepted singular and plural form of the name, and some references use ''Gagauzy'' (from Ukrainian) or ''Gagauzi''. History Of Gagauzia
The history of Gagauzia dates back to ancient times. With the exception of a six-day de facto independence in the winter of 1906, when a peasant uprising declared an autonomous Comrat Republic, Gagauzians have been ruled by the Russian Empire (1812–1917), Romania (1918–1940 and 1941–1944), the Soviet Union (1940–1941 and 1944–1991), and Moldova (1917–1918 and 1991 to date). Middle Ages The Gagauz people are said to be descended from the Seljuq dynasty, Seljuk Turks that settled in Dobruja, together with the Pechenegs, Oghuz Turks, Uz (Oghuz) and Cuman (Kipchak) people that followed the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Kaykaus II, İzzeddin Keykavus II (1236-1276). More specifically, one clan of Oghuz Turks migrated to the Balkans during the inter-tribal conflicts with other Turks.
