Haliburton County
Haliburton is a county of Ontario, Canada, known as a tourist and cottage area in Central Ontario for its scenery and for its resident artists. Minden Hills is the county seat. Haliburton County and the village of Haliburton are named after Thomas Chandler Haliburton, author, statesman, and the first chairman of the Canadian Land and Emigration Company. The county borders Algonquin Provincial Park on the north. History It was originally organized in 1874 as the Provisional County of Haliburton. The county's economy has historically been based on the lumber industry, with the first sawmill officially opening on December 18, 1864. The Canadian Land and Emigration Company later opened in the 1870s and operated until 1892. A third sawmill was constructed in 1903 by the William Laking Lumber Company. Jeff Halliburton
Jeffrey Halliburton (born July 3, 1949) is an American former basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for two seasons. He is the cousin of Basketball Hall of Famer Julius Erving. College career Halliburton, a 6'5" guard, transferred to Drake University from San Jacinto Junior College and played for the Bulldogs for two seasons from 1969 to 1971. He led the Bulldogs to consecutive NCAA Tournament Regional Final appearances in 1970 and 1971. He was named first team All-Missouri Valley Conference both seasons at Drake, and was named MVC Player of the Year and an honorable mention All-American as a senior. Professional career Halliburton was drafted in the third round of the 1971 NBA draft (39th pick overall) by the Atlanta Hawks. William Hersey Otis Haliburton
William Hersey Otis Haliburton (September 3, 1767 – July 7, 1829) was a lawyer, judge, and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Windsor Township in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1806 to 1811, and represented Hants County from 1811 to 1824. Haliburton was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, the son of William Haliburton and Susanna Otis. Haliburton studied law in Halifax and returned to Windsor to practice. He also served as an officer in the local militia. In 1794, Haliburton married Lucy Chandler Grant: Subsequent to her death he married, secondly, in 1803, Susanna Davis, the daughter of Michael Francklin. He later served as Chief Justice of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas. He was President of the Court of Quarter Sessions for the Middle Division until his death at Windsor at the age of 61. William Dobinson Halliburton
William Dobinson Halliburton FRS (21 June 1860, in Middlesex – 21 May 1931, in Exeter) was a British physiologist, noted for being one of the founders of the science of biochemistry. William was one of four children (three sisters) born to Thomas Gill Halliburton and Mary Strachan Homan of Middlesex. He was educated at the University College School and later at the University College London, obtaining a BSc in 1879. On his MRCS in 1883 he was appointed Assistant in Physiology at the University College under Sir Edward Sharpey-Schafer. His MD followed in 1884, his membership of the Royal College of Physicians a year later and his Fellowship in 1892. Halliburton succeeded Gerald Francis Yeo in the chair of Physiology at King's College London in 1889. Over the period of 34 years at King's College he was deeply involved in its administration and was dean of the Faculty of Medical Science for many years. Sir Walter de Haliburton, 1st Lord Haliburton of Dirleton (died circa 1449), Lord High Treasurer of Scotland was a Scottish noble. Life The eldest son of Sir John Haliburton of Dirleton (d. 1392), by his spouse Margaret, daughter of Sir John Cameron of Ballegarno. He succeeded to the Dirleton estate in East Lothian, upon the death of his father in 1392 and also inherited his uncle's estate of Haliburton in the early 15th century. Thomas Chandler Haliburton (17 December 1796 – 27 August 1865) was a Nova Scotian politician, judge, and author. He made an important political contribution to the state of Nova Scotia before its entry into Confederation of Canada. He was the first international best-selling author of fiction from what is now Canada. In 1856, he immigrated to England, where he served as a Conservative Member of Parliament. Mariotta or Maryon or Marion Haliburton, Lady Home (circa 1500–circa 1563) was a 16th-century Scottish noblewoman. She varied the spelling of her forename between ''Mariotta'', ''Marion'', and ''Mary''. James Burton (22 September 1786 – 22 February 1862) (formerly Haliburton and latterly Haliburton) was an early British Egyptologist, known for his pioneering exploration and mapping of the Valley of the Kings, during which he became the first individual of the modern age to enter KV5; his pioneering excavations at Karnak, during which he discovered the Karnak king list; and his excavations at Medinet Habu, during which he was part of the team that discovered TT391.
