Halfway House
A halfway house is an institute for people with criminal backgrounds or substance use disorder problems to learn (or relearn) the necessary skills to re-integrate into society and better support and care for themselves. As well as serving as a residence, halfway houses provide social, medical, psychiatric, educational, and other similar services. They are termed "halfway houses" due to their being halfway between completely independent living and in-patient or carceral facilities, where residents are highly restricted in their behavior and freedoms. The term has been used in the United States since at least the Temperance Movement of the 1840s. Types Halfway houses in the US generally fall into one of two models. In one model, upon admission, a patient is classified as to the type of disability, ability to reintegrate into society, and expected time frame for doing so. Halfway House (Ansted, West Virginia)
Halfway House, also known as the Tyree Tavern, is a historic inn and tavern located at Ansted, West Virginia, Ansted, Fayette County, West Virginia. It is a two-story, log and frame building with a gable roof measuring 50 feet long and 20 feet deep. The original log section was built prior to 1810. It was expanded to its present configuration about 1827. It served as a stage coach stop on the James River and Kanawha Turnpike. Notable guests included Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, and John C. Breckinridge, John Breckenridge. It also was headquarters of the Chicago Gray Dragoons during the American Civil War. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
