Hainesville, Illinois
Hainesville is a village in Avon Township, Lake County, Illinois, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 3,546. Hainesville has the distinction of being the oldest incorporated community within Lake County. History In 1838, a young boy named Elijah M. Haines (1822–1889) and his family moved from New York City to the Chicago area. In 1836, the young boy purchased a farm in Hainesville. During the winter of 1841–42, Haines taught school in Waukegan, Illinois (then known as Little Fort). In 1846, he surveyed and platted Hainesville. On February 26, 1847, the village incorporation papers were drafted. It is recorded that Elijah Haines met Abraham Lincoln in 1847. The two men met frequently and became well acquainted. It has been said that Lincoln spent the night in Hainesville a few times. In 1848, construction began on the Lake and McHenry Plank Road. Hainesville is an unincorporated community located within Sandyston Township, in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. It lies along a stretch of County Route 645, known as the Layton-Hainesville Road, that runs parallel to U.S. Route 206 and connects to County Route 675. It is adjacent to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, and near the towns of Shaytown and Layton. Its coordinates are latitude 41.25194 and longitude −74.80333. It is above sea level. Hainesville is an unincorporated community in Wood County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 74 in 2000. History The area around Hainesville was settled in 1845, and Christian H. Haines built a gristmill there in 1870. The Dupree post office moved to the community in 1893; it was renamed Hainesville after Haines. His family owned a general store here. Another business was the office of Dr. James Marion Puckett, who may have started the community when he first practiced his doctoring. 25 people were living in the community in 1896 and were served by a blacksmith and cotton gin. The first Baptist church was organized in 1897. Hainesville had an agricultural economy; settlers primarily grew cotton but also farmed sugar cane, peanuts, melons and peaches. The town's post office closed in 1907. It had 200 residents, six businesses, and several churches in the 1930s. The population plummeted to 50 in 1949. Hainesville had a popul ...
