County Of Hainaut
The County of Hainaut (french: Comté de Hainaut; nl, Graafschap Henegouwen; la, comitatus hanoniensis), sometimes spelled Hainault, was a territorial lordship within the medieval Holy Roman Empire that straddled what is now the border of Belgium and France. Its most important towns included Mons ( nl, Bergen), now in Belgium, and Valenciennes, now in France. The core of the county was named after the river Haine. It stretched southeast to include the ''Avesnois'' region and southwest to the Selle (Scheldt tributary). In the Middle Ages, it also gained control of part of the original ''pagus'' of Brabant to its north and the ''pagus'' of Oosterbant to the east, but they were not part of the old ''pagus'' of Hainaut. In modern terms, the original core of Hainaut consisted of the central part of the Belgian province of Hainaut, and the eastern part of the French ''département'' of Nord (the arrondissements of Avesnes-sur-Helpe and Valenciennes). Hainaut already appeared in ...

French Hainaut
French Hainaut (french: Hainaut français ) is one of two areas in France that form the département du Nord, its eastern part. It corresponds roughly with the Arrondissement of Avesnes-sur-Helpe (east), Arrondissement of Cambrai (south-west) and Arrondissement of Valenciennes (north-west). Until the 17th century it was an integral part of the County of Hainaut, ruled by the Burgundians and later the Habsburgs. In a series of wars between France and Spain, this southern part of Hainaut was conquered by France, together with the adjacent smaller Cambrésis or the Bishopric of Cambrai to the south-west, loosely associated with it, and the similar area to these two combined in the west, southern Flanders, which borders on the English Channel (French: la Manche). Together these formed the French province of Flandre immediately before the French Revolution, which became the current Nord département References * Gilbert of Mons Gislebert (or Gilbert) of Mons ( 1150 – 1225) wa ...

Hainaut-Sambre
Hainaut-Sambre was a Belgian group of steel companies based in the Charleroi region, it was founded in 1955 by the merger of ''Usine Métallurgiques du Hainaut'' (based in Couillet, Charleroi), and the metal making division of '' Sambre et Moselle'' (based in Montignies-sur-Sambre, Charleroi). The company absorbed another Charleroi based steel group ''Thy-Marcinelle et Providence'' in 1980 before being merged with the Liège Province based steel group Cockerill in 1981 to form Cockerill-Sambre. A predecessor company SA Marchinelle & Couillet built locomotives at the ''Usines Métallurgiques du Hainaut'' which were used on industrial railways, and exported around the world. The locomotive builder was commonly known as Couillet. History Background It has been speculated that the beginnings of industrialised iron working around Charleroi may date at least to 1000AD, with water powered forge, and furnace fed by charcoal.
