''Hail Columbia,'' is a 1982 American IMAX documentary film, released June 1982, about NASA's Space Shuttle program, particularly the first Space Shuttle, ''Columbia''. The film is directed by Graeme Ferguson. Synopsis The film starts off by showing the rollout and assembly of NASA's first space-worthy orbiter, ''Columbia''. This involves showing in high quality, ''Columbia'', 'the world's first true spaceship' being rolled out of the Orbiter Processing Facility, and vehicle stacking at the Vehicle Assembly Building. ''Columbia'' is then rolled out on the Mobile Launch Platform to Launch Complex 39A. Once on the launchpad ''Columbia'' throttled up the three main engines during a static fire, to make sure they were in working order for the launch in April 1981. Graeme Ferguson (filmmaker)
Ivan Graeme Ferguson (October 7, 1929May 8, 2021) was a Canadian filmmaker and inventor. He was noted for co-inventing IMAX. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1992. Early life Ferguson was born in Toronto on October 7, 1929. He studied political science and economics at Victoria College, University of Toronto, from 1948 to 1952. He served as cameraman for the university's film society, and was consequently chosen for a apprenticeship program at the National Film Board of Canada during the summer of 1950. He was elected as one of the representatives of his college to the Students’ Administrative Council. After graduation, he was chosen as national secretary of the World University Service. Career Ferguson relocated to New York during the late 1950s, and worked as a freelance filmmaker for the next decade. Project Gemini () was NASA's second human spaceflight program. Conducted between projects Mercury and Apollo, Gemini started in 1961 and concluded in 1966. The Gemini spacecraft carried a two-astronaut crew. Ten Gemini crews and 16 individual astronauts flew low Earth orbit (LEO) missions during 1965 and 1966. STS-2 was the second Space Shuttle mission conducted by NASA, and the second flight of the orbiter ''Columbia''. The mission, crewed by Joe H. Engle and Richard H. Truly, launched on November 12, 1981, and landed two days later on November 14, 1981. STS-2 marked the first time that a crewed, reusable orbital vehicle returned to space. Reusable Launch System
A reusable launch vehicle have parts that can be recovered and reflown, while carrying payloads from the surface to outer space. Rocket stages are the most common launch vehicle parts aimed for reuse. Smaller parts such as rocket engines and boosters can also be reused, though reusable spacecraft may be launched on top of an expendable launch vehicle. Reusable launch vehicles do not need to make these parts for each launch, therefore reducing its launch cost significantly. However, these benefits are diminished by the cost of recovery and refurbishment. Sonic Boom
A sonic boom is a sound associated with shock waves created when an object travels through the air faster than the speed of sound. Sonic booms generate enormous amounts of sound energy, sounding similar to an explosion or a thunderclap to the human ear. A decibel is the primary unit measurement of sound. "A thunderclap is incredibly loud, producing levels between 100 and 120 dBA (Decibel, decibels A)- the equivalent of standing near a jet during take-off." Fiat M13/40
The Carro Armato M13/40 was an Italian World War II tank designed to replace the M11/39 in the Italian Army at the start of World War II. It was the primary tank used by the Italians throughout the war. The design was influenced by the British Vickers 6-Ton and was based on the modified chassis of the earlier M11/39. Production of the M11/39 was cut short in order to get the M13/40 into production. The name refers to "M" for ''Medio'' (medium) according to the Italian tank weight standards at the time, 13 tonnes was the scheduled weight and 1940 the initial year of production. Rubber Room (bunker)
Rubber room is the nickname given to the emergency egress bunkers located beneath the launch pads at Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39; there is one below each of the two pads. Built in the 1960s for the Apollo program, they were intended to provide a safe refuge for personnel on the launch pad in the event of an imminent explosion of the rocket, when a rapid egress of the pad is required and the normal evacuation methods would take too long. The bunker was designed to withstand the explosion of a fully fueled Saturn V rocket on the pad above, and could support up to 20 people for 24 hours. Access to the bunker was via a slide chute that began at an opening on the surface of the launch pad. A launch escape system (LES) or launch abort system (LAS) is a crew-safety system connected to a space capsule that can be used to quickly separate the capsule from its launch vehicle in case of an emergency requiring the abort of the launch, such as an impending explosion.
