Hahn, Texas
Hahn or Hahn Prairie is an unincorporated community in northwest Wharton County, Texas, Wharton County, in the U.S. state of Texas. The tiny community is located at the intersection of Farm to Market Road 1160 (FM 1160) and Farm to Market Road 2546 (FM 2546) northwest of El Campo, Texas, El Campo. There are no road signs identifying the site but the nearby Hahn Cemetery is marked and there is a small cluster of homes around the junction. The surrounding farmland is dotted by a number of natural gas wells. History The ''Handbook of Texas'' article writes of Hahn Prairie in the past tense. Hahn Prairie was located on the old Hahn Ranch northwest of Wharton, Texas, Wharton in northwest Wharton County. A post office was established in the settlement in 1897. By 1905 the school reported two teachers and 32 students. Five years later 50 persons lived in Hahn. The post office closed in 1929. Farm To Market Road 1160
Farm to Market Road 1160 (FM 1160) is a farm-to-market road in Wharton County in the U.S. state of Texas. The highway starts at State Highway Loop 523 (Loop 523) in Louise, intersects with Future Interstate 69/U.S. Route 59 outside Louise and continues in a northerly direction for most of its length. Before its end at State Highway 71 (SH 71) near New Taiton, the highway turns directly to the east. Route description FM 1160 starts at Loop 523 in Louise and heads north. Loop 523 is also called North Street. The road that extends to the southeast across the Union Pacific Railroad is named Wharton Street. State Highway 71 (SH 71) is a Texas state highway that runs . The northern terminus is at US 87 and US 377 south of Brady and its southern terminus is at SH 35 near Blessing. This highway is designated the "10th Mountain Division Highway" from SH 95 to Interstate 35. History SH 71 was originally designated on August 21, 1923 from Austin to Columbus, replacing SH 3D and the western half of SH 3A. New Taiton, Texas
New Taiton is an unincorporated community in northwest Wharton County, Texas, United States. The community is situated at the intersection of State Highway 71 (SH 71) and Farm to Market Road 961 (FM 961) north-northwest of El Campo, Texas. New Taiton is identified by road signs on SH 71 and FM 961. The area around the community is intensively farmed and several oil and gas wells are located nearby. History The community of New Taiton is described as being south of Taiton at the junction of SH 71 and FM 961. The area was first settled by Americans in 1886 but in 1894 it received an influx of Czech and German immigrants looking for farmland near El Campo. The community was first named Tait but it was renamed Taiton in 1896 when the first post office was opened. In 1901 Ignace Jurasek donated land for a new schoolhouse to replace the original one.
