The naming convention used in Eritrea and Ethiopia does not have family names and typically consists of an individual personal name and a separate patronymic. This is similar to Arabic name, Arabic, Icelandic name, Icelandic, and Somali name, Somali naming conventions. Traditionally for Ethiopians and Eritreans the lineage is traced paternally; legislation has been passed in Eritrea that allows for this to be done on the maternal side as well. Bahta Hagos
Bahta Hagos ( Ge'ez: ባህታ ሓጎስ), died December 19, 1894, was Dejazmach of Akkele Guzay, and retrospectively considered an important leader of Eritrean resistance to foreign domination specifically against northern Ethiopian and Italian colonialism. He was born sometime between 1839 and 1850 into a rich peasant family in the town of Segheneyti and was killed in the Battle of Halai against the Italian Colonial Army on December 19, 1894. He was of the Tsena-Degle Tigrinyas, from Akele Guzay. Early fame Bahta originally gained recognition in 1875 when he killed Embaye Araya son of Rasi Araya, an Ethiopian Governor, in a skirmish precipitated by raiding of the area. Mesfin Hagos
Mesfin Hagos is an Eritrean who was one of the founding members of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF). In government, he was the Eritrean Minister of Defence during the 1990s. After repression by president Isaias Afwerki against Mesfin's colleagues, Mesfin sought political asylum in Germany in 2013, where he lived . Childhood and education Mesfin was born in Azien, Eritrea on 21 November 1947. Rebel fighter Mesfin was a founding member of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) in 1977. Before founding that organization he had joined the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) in 1966 as an ordinary member. He eventually became Deputy Commander of ELF Zone 5. Yared Hagos (born 27 March 1983) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey centre of Ethiopian descent, who last played for the Sheffield Steelers in the UK's EIHL. He also recently played with the Krefeld Pinguine in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). Playing career Hagos started playing professionally in the Swedish elite league in the 2000–01 season with AIK Hockey. He played for AIK for one more season before playing two seasons with Timrå IK. He was drafted by Dallas Stars in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, as their third pick, 70th overall. Hagos played for the Iowa Stars in the AHL for two seasons, totalling 44 points in 132 regular season games. Hagos Gebrhiwet Berhe ( ti, ሓጎስ ገብረሂወት, born 11 May 1994) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner and the former World Junior Record holder in the 5000 meters (12:47:53).
