''Hagen's Circus'' was a 1948 Australian radio serial created by Max Afford. It was set in a circus and starred Thelma Scott as the owner. Thelma Scott played the lead role. Actors who appeared in it included Muriel Steinbeck Muriel Myee Steinbeck (21 July 1913 – 20 July 1982) was an Australian actress who worked extensively in radio, theatre, television and film. She is best known for her performance as the wife of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith in '' Smithy'' (1946) ..., Guy Doleman and Charles Tingwell. The show was the idea of producer Paul Jacklin who was determined to disprove an old radio adage that people disliked shows set in circuses. Jacklin hired Max Afford to script it. Afford researched the story visiting Wirth's Circus. It was one of the most popular Australian radio serials of its day and helped make the reputation of Guy Doleman. Thelma Scott
Thelma Marjorie Scott (17 June 1913 – 23 November 2006) was an Australian character actress whose six-decade career in theatre, radio, film and Australian made her one of her country's most recognisable and beloved personalities. Having started her career in the early 1930s in theatre and film productions, she became one of the nation's biggest radio performers, during the 1940s featuring in productions such as ''Big Sister'' and '' Blue Hills''. She returned to make TV films in the early late 1950s and then became a star on television after it was launched in Australia. She became best known for roles in soap operas including ''Number 96'' as Claire Houghton and Mrs. Jennings in '' Richmond Hill''. Theatre Thelma Scott began her career in the theatre in 1931 at the age of 18, having joined the Gregan McMahon's Gregan McMahon Players. Max Afford
Malcolm R. Afford (8 April 1906 – 2 November 1954) known as Max Afford, was an Australian playwright and novelist. Biography Early years Afford was born in Adelaide, South Australia, the youngest son of Robert D. Afford of "Glenleigh", Stamford street Parkside, an inner suburb. He left school when he was 16, and started writing novels and plays. Personal life After winning the centenary competition in Adelaide, he moved to Sydney in 1936, on contract to the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) as a playwright and producer in the Federal Productions Department. Max married Thelma Thomas on 16 April 1938 at St Michael's church, Vaucluse, Sydney. Thelma, a costume designer whom he met on the set of ''Colonel Founder / Awake my Love'' two years earlier, was originally from Broken Hill, then Adelaide, and had moved to Sydney to design the costumes for the New South Wales sesqui-centenary pageant. Muriel Myee Steinbeck (21 July 1913 – 20 July 1982) was an Australian actress who worked extensively in radio, theatre, television and film. She is best known for her performance as the wife of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith in '' Smithy'' (1946) and for playing the lead role in '' Autumn Affair'' (1958–59), Australia's first television serial. Charles William Tingwell AM (3 January 1923 – 15 May 2009), known professionally as Bud Tingwell or Charles 'Bud' Tingwell, was an Australian film, television, theatre and radio actor. One of the veterans of Australian film, he acted in his first motion picture in 1946 and went on to appear in more than 100 films and numerous TV programs in both the United Kingdom and Australia. Wirth's Circus, also known as Wirth Brothers' Circus, was Australia's largest and most prestigious circus company for eight decades. Billed as Australia's own 'Greatest show on Earth' (a reference to the slogan of the American P. T. Barnum Circus), the travelling circus held an international reputation.
