Rupert Nigel Pendrill Hadow known as Pen Hadow (British, born 26 February 1962), is an Arctic region explorer, advocate, adventurer and guide. He is the only person to have trekked solo, and without resupply by third parties, from Canada to the Geographic North Pole. He is also the first Briton to have trekked, without resupply by third parties, to both the North and South Geographic Poles from the respective continental coastlines of North America and Antarctica. Hadow led the multi-award-winning £6.5m international research programme, Catlin Arctic Survey (2007-2012) which investigated sea ice volume, ocean acidification and ocean circulation. A number of papers have since been published in scientific journals by the researchers. Patrick Francis Hadow
Patrick Francis "Frank" Hadow (2 January 1855 – 29 June 1946) was an English tennis player, who won the Wimbledon championship in 1878. Personal life Born 2 January 1855 Regent's Park, his father was Patrick Douglas Hadow who was educated at Harrow School and Balliol College Oxford University and became Chairman of the P&O Shipping Company. Frank Hadow attended Harrow School along with six of his seven brothers who were known as the "Harrow Hadows". Hadow represented Harrow at rackets and the brothers were well known as distinguished cricketers. Hadow's oldest brother Douglas Robert Hadow died during the descent after the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. Sporting career He was the loftiest Wimbledon Champion. Grace Eleanor Hadow
Grace Eleanor Hadow OBE (9 December 1875 in Cirencester, England – 19 January 1940, Marylebone, London) was an author, principal of what would become St Anne's College, Oxford and vice-chairman of the National Federation of Women's Institutes (NFWI). Life Hadow was born in 1875 at South Cerney vicarage, near Cirencester. She was the youngest child and fourth daughter of the Reverend William Elliott Hadow and Mary Lang ''née'' Cornish. Her godfather was Sir William Henry Hadow who was also her elder brother. In 1888, aged 13, Hadow won a scholarship to study at Brownshill Court School, Stroud. From the age of 16 she attended Truro High School. In 1894, she went to Trier in Germany for a year to study language and music. From 1899 to 1900, she taught at Cheltenham Ladies' College. In 1900, she began to study English at Somerville College, Oxford, but as a woman she was not allowed to receive a degree, although she could sit exams and took first-class honours in 1903. While ... Walter Hadow
Walter Henry Hadow (25 September 1849 – 15 September 1898) was an English first-class cricketer, who had amateur status. Hadow was a noted schoolboy cricketer at Harrow, mentioned by Harry Altham as one of "a striking array of school batsmen". He went on to Brasenose College, Oxford, where he continued to be a noted player and Altham described him as one of "a steady stream of exceptional batsmen from the ranks of the Universities". An all-rounder, he was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm roundarm slow bowler who made 97 first-class appearances from 1869 to 1884. He represented several teams but mostly Middlesex, Oxford University and Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Hadow scored 3,071 runs at an average of 19.56 with a highest innings of 217, one of two centuries in addition to ten half-centuries. Gerald Edgcumbe Hadow
Gerald Edgcumbe Hadow (13 June 1911 – 27 February 1978 Cambridge) was a British Christian missionary in East Africa. Early life He was the son of Canon Herbert Edgcumbe Hadow and Edith Rose Abell. He grew up at Quedgeley Vicarage, Gloucestershire. He attended Haileybury College, leaving in about 1930. From there he went to Oriel College, Oxford University. His uncle was musician Sir William Henry Hadow and his aunt author Grace Eleanor Hadow. He was a keen singer and was a Tenor Solo at Haileybury College. Later life He was ordained a priest at Bristol Cathedral in 1936. He was a missionary for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts in East Africa from 1939 to 1977. He served in Manda, Likoma and Milo, Tanzania. During this time in South Western Tanzania he was a regular visitor to Uwemba Mission in the Livingstone Mountains. Streatley is a village and civil parish in the Central Bedfordshire district of Bedfordshire, England. Geography Streatley is situated just to the west of the A6, and is the first village on the A6 north of Luton, being about north of central Luton. Nearby villages are Lower Sundon, further to the west, Sharpenhoe, 1.5 miles north, and Barton-le-Clay, a somewhat larger village about 1.5 miles north, on the eastern side of the A6. The parish covers the village of Streatley along with Sharpenhoe. In the south of the parish it covers both sides of the A6, bordering Luton to the south and North Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire to the east. North of the village of Streatley, the parish is entirely to the west of the A6. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 1,707.
