Hadleigh, Suffolk
Hadleigh () is an ancient market town and civil parish in South Suffolk, East Anglia, situated, next to the River Brett, between the larger towns of Sudbury and Ipswich. It had a population of 8,253 at the 2011 census. The headquarters of Babergh District Council were located in the town until 2017. Origin of the name Skeat, in his 1913 ''The Place-Names of Suffolk'', says this: Spelt ''Hadlega'', R.B.; ''Hadleigh'', Ipm.; ''Hædleage'', in a late chapter, Thorpe, Diplomat, 527; ''Headlega'', Annals of St Neot, quoted in Plummer's ed. of the A.S.Chronicle, ii. 102; ''Hetlega'', D.B., p.184. Hadleigh Railway
The Hadleigh Railway was a long single track branch railway line in Suffolk, England, that connected Hadleigh to the main line railway network at Bentley Junction. It was built by the nominally independent Eastern Union and Hadleigh Junction Railway company and opened in 1847. By the time of opening it had been taken over by the larger Eastern Union Railway. It was never successful commercially, nor in reviving the fortunes of Hadleigh itself, and passenger services were withdrawn in 1932, followed by total closure in 1965. The northernmost two mile stretch of the trackbed, from the station site in Hadleigh to the site of Raydon Wood Station, now forms the Hadleigh Railway Walk. Hadleigh High School is situated on Highlands Road in Hadleigh, Suffolk, Hadleigh, Suffolk, England. It is a secondary school with Academy (English school), academy status, and has around 760 pupils aged 11 to 16. It has a specialism in science. The school upheld its 'good' rating from Ofsted, following a short inspection in 2019. This has been held since Ofsted's first 'full' inspection in 2012. Hadleigh Railway Station
Hadleigh railway station was a station in Hadleigh, Suffolk, the terminus of the Hadleigh Railway, a short branch line from Bentley Junction. The line opened in 1847. The original intermediate stations were at Bentley Church, Capel and Raydon Wood. The terminus had goods sidings on both the south-western and north-eastern sides, the latter serving malt houses and which was also used as a running round loop. There was also a small engine shed. The station building was very ornate, if somewhat dwarfed by the adjacent malt houses, with attractive coupled chimneys and unusual windows with the frame and arch of stone. The decline in passenger numbers using the branch can be seen in the patronage figures, which were 14,447 in 1923 compared to 5,086 just five years later. Hadleigh, Essex
Hadleigh is a town and former civil parish, now in the unparished area of Benfleet, in southeast Essex, England, on the A13 between Thundersley, Benfleet and Leigh-on-Sea with a population of 18,300. In 1951 the parish had a population of 5,209. It has a squared bypass to the north (the A127 'Southend Arterial Road'). History Hadleigh is known for its castle, and the country park to the south of the town centre. This gives its name to the local government district of Castle Point, with its extensive views overlooking the Thames Estuary. Most of the facing stones were stripped from the castle in the 16th century – the only bits still visible today being high inside the surviving towers and a small section of the 'gate house' – so most of what remains today is the rubble infill that was packed between the outer facing stones. Hadleigh Castle
Hadleigh Castle is a ruined fortification in the English county of Essex, overlooking the Thames Estuary from south of the town of Hadleigh. Built after 1215 during the reign of Henry III by Hubert de Burgh, the castle was surrounded by parkland and had an important economic and defensive role. The castle was significantly expanded and remodelled by Edward III, who turned it into a grander property, designed to defend against a potential French attack, as well as to provide the King with a convenient private residence close to London. Built on a soft hill of London clay, the castle has often been subject to subsidence; this, combined with the sale of its stonework in the 16th century, has led to it now being ruined. The remains are now preserved by English Heritage and protected under UK law as a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument. Boze Hadleigh (born May 15, 1954), sometimes writing as George Hadley-Garcia, is an author. Several of his books cover LGBT culture, popular culture, and show business. His 22 books have been translated into 14 languages. Writings Several of his books deal with pop culture and/or entertainment history and how the media and status quo shape and manipulate audiences' perceptions and opinions. Some of his books are exclusively about the LGBT presence in and contributions to entertainment. Some of Hadleigh's books are quotes collections, some are histories and overviews, and some are interviews with movie personalities.
