Haden (mango)
The 'Haden' mango (or 'Hayden') is a named mango cultivar that became one of the most widely cultivated in the world after it was introduced in the early 20th century through south Florida. It would ultimately become the parent of many other mango cultivars later developed in Florida. History In 1902, Captain John J. Haden, a retired U.S. army officer living in Coconut Grove, Florida, planted four dozen seedlings of Mulgoba mangoes he had purchased from Professor Elbridge Gale in Mangonia, near Lake Worth Lagoon in the area of present-day West Palm Beach. Haden would die the following year, but his wife Florence cared for the trees at their property in Coconut Grove, which first fruited in 1910. One tree in particular produced superior quality fruit, with brilliant color and good flavor. This cultivar was selected and given the family name. The 'Hatcher' mango is a named commercial mango cultivar that originated in south Florida. History The original tree was grown from seed on the property of nurseryman John Hatcher in Lantana, Florida and was selected during the 1940s. A 2005 pedigree analysis indicated that Hatcher was likely a cross between the Haden and Brooks cultivars. John Hatcher's grove continues in operation throughout the decades selling the Hatcher mangoes and trees. Today, the grove is still in operation at its original location and ships mangoes nationwide. Glenn (mango)
The 'Glenn' mango is a mango cultivar that originated in South Florida. History Glenn was reportedly a seedling of a Saigon that was planted in Miami, Florida in 1940. It was moved to the property of Roscoe E. Glenn in 1943. The tree first produced fruit in 1945, and was found to be of good quality. While it was propagated thereafter in the state, it did not gain widespread commercial acceptance due to perceptions of lacking ideal storage characteristics. It would take several decades for the tree to become recognized for being a variety with positive characteristics that would make it a popular selection. Aside from the quality of the fruit, the tree could also be maintained at a reasonably small height and width (making pruning and harvesting easier), was moderately disease resistant, and usually produced a good-sized crop. Fascell
The 'Fascell' mango is a named commercial mango cultivar that originated in south Florida. History The original tree was grown from a seed planted by Michael Fascell of Miami, Florida in 1929, and was likely a cross between Haden and Brooks. Fascell's intention was to create a variety to fill the gap between the harvesting seasons of Haden and Brooks. The tree first fruited in 1936. Fascell, a nurseryman and prominent member of the Florida Mango Forum, patented the fruit in 1941 (plant patent number 451), making the Fascell one of the first patented mango varieties in Florida. Beginning in 1942 the tree was sold as nursery stock on a small scale. Though it never became a popular dooryard tree, Fascell is still grown on a small commercial scale in Florida. The 'Edward' mango is a named mango cultivar that originated in south Florida. History During the early 20th century, Edward Simmonds was the head of the USDA's Plant Introduction Station in Miami, Florida. Due to the problems encountered with Indian-descended mango cultivars in Florida relating to their poor disease resistance and unreliable bearing habits, Simmonds began a mango breeding program in the 1920s where he sought to cross several cultivars of Indian descent with cultivars of southeast Asian origin. Simmonds' hope was to develop hybrid varieties that would take on the best characteristics of both parents, with color and flavor of the Indian line and the flavor and disease resistance of the southeast Asian mangoes. The 'Cogshall' mango is a named mango cultivar that originated in southwest Florida. History The original tree grew from a seed planted in Pine Island, Florida. For decades the parentage of Cogshall was unknown, however a 2005 pedigree analysis estimated that Haden was the parent. The tree first fruited in the 1940s and in 1950 a specimen was planted for observation at the University of Florida's Tropical Research and Education Center (TREC) in Homestead, Florida.
