Norman Hackerman
Norman Hackerman (March 2, 1912 – June 16, 2007) was an American chemist, professor, and academic administrator who served as the 18th President of the University of Texas at Austin (1967–1970) and later as the 4th President of Rice University (1970–1985). He was an internationally known expert in metal corrosion. Biography Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the only son of Jacob Hackerman and Anna Raffel, immigrants from the Baltic regions of the Russian Empire that later became Estonia and Latvia, respectively. Hackerman earned his bachelor's degree in 1932 and his doctor's degree in chemistry in 1935 from Johns Hopkins University. He taught at Johns Hopkins, Loyola College in Baltimore and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, before working on the Manhattan Project in World War II. The Welch Foundation, based in Houston, Texas, is one of the United States' oldest and largest private funding sources for chemistry researchers. It is a non-profit organization named for Robert Alonzo Welch, an industrialist who provided the funds to set up the foundation, along with scholarships, endowments, and funding for chemical research. Willard Hackerman (October 6, 1918 – February 10, 2014) was an American businessman, long-time CEO of a major construction firm, and philanthropist based in Baltimore, Maryland. Biography Willard Hackerman was president and CEO of The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company and a prominent Baltimore philanthropist. Hackerman grew up in Baltimore Maryland and attended the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, a public high school known for its engineering program. He graduated from the Johns Hopkins University, where he studied civil engineering. In 1938 he started his career at Whiting-Turner where he worked until his death in 2014. Upon his death the Baltimore Sun said that while he held no public office, he was as much a city father to Baltimore as any mayor or City Council member, delegate or senator.
