HM Prison Morwell River
A nursery and workers camp was established by the Forests Commission Victoria (FCV) in 1949 at Olsens Bridge at the head of the Morwell River, which is just east of Boolarra in Victoria. The nursery was established to grow mountain ash seedlings for the Strzelecki Ranges reforestation scheme. The scheme, which began in the early 1930s, ran quietly and successfully for nearly 60 years and is believed to have been the largest and most sustained reforestation project of its type in Australia. The FCV workers camp was later to become the HM Morwell River Prison in May 1961, where up to 80 inmates worked in the nursery and planted seedlings across the Strzeleckis under the guidance of FCV employees. The Prison was a "Minimum Security" facility and escapes occurred in 1962, 1967 and 1968. Morwell River Prison (2006)
Morwell is a town in the Latrobe Valley area of Gippsland, in South-Eastern Victoria, Australia approximately 152 km (94 mi) east of Melbourne. Morwell has a population of 14,389 people at the . It is both the seat of local government and administrative centre for the City of Latrobe. Corrections Victoria is part of the Department of Justice and Community Safety in the Victorian Government, and is responsible for the provision of custodial and community-based services as an important element of the criminal justice system in the state of Victoria, Australia. The Forests Commission Victoria (FCV) was the main government authority responsible for management and protection of State forests in Victoria, Australia between 1918 and 1983. Boolarra, Victoria
Boolarra is a small township located in the Latrobe Valley, in central Gippsland, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. At th2016 Census Boolarra had a population of 973 with 48% males and 52% females and an average age of 50. The Boolarra Folk Festival is held in the town every year in March and attracts music lovers from around Australia and the world. The town is also infamous for producing the Boolarra strain of carp (''Cyprinus carpio'') which, after their release into the Murray River near Mildura, spread throughout Australia. Strzelecki Ranges
The Strzelecki Ranges (pronounced STREHZ leckee) is a set of low mountain ridges located in the West Gippsland and South Gippsland regions of the Australian state of Victoria. The Ranges are named after Paweł Edmund Strzelecki, a Polish explorer, who with the assistance of Charley Tarra the small party's Aboriginal guide, led an expedition through this region in 1840. They also form a biogeographic subregion of the South Eastern Highlands. "Land of the Lyrebird" is also a common alternative name for the Strzelecki Ranges based on a popular 1920s book. Derryn Nigel Hinch (born 9 February 1944) is a New Zealand-born media personality, politician, actor, journalist and published author. Harry Beitzel
Henry John "Harry" Beitzel (6 April 1927 – 13 August 2017) was an Australian football umpire, print, radio and television sports broadcaster and media personality best known for his contribution to Australian rules football. Early sporting life Harry attended Melbourne's University High School. He along with fellow schoolboy (future cricket test captain) Neil Harvey developed their skills for both football and cricket. Both boys were left-hander batsmen and together share many high scoring partnerships. Both boys joined the Fitzroy Cricket Club and Beitzel won the second grade batting averages. HM Prison Won Wron
HM Prison Won Wron was a minimum security prison located at Won Wron near Yarram in Victoria. In 1962/63, a group of prisoners and prison officers from HM Prison Morwell River began construction of the HM Prison Won Wron. The facility was associated with a Forests Commission Victoria (FCV) nursery to raise pine seedlings for the Strzelecki Ranges reforestation scheme, although no prison labour was available for forests work until 1968. Eucalypt seedlings were produced at a similar FCV nursery at Olsens Bridge near Boolara which was associated with HM Prison Morwell River. The Olsens Bridge nursery operated until 1991 when operations transferred to Won Wron. Soon after in 1993, the Victorian Plantations Corporation was formed and transferred its nursery operations to an expanded facility at nearby Gelliondale.
