HMS Tweed (1759)
HMS ''Tweed'' was a 32-gun sailing frigate of the fifth rate produced for the Royal Navy. She was designed in 1757 by Sir Thomas Slade, based on the lines of the smaller sixth rate HMS ''Tartar'', but with a 10-foot midsection inserted. She was built in Blaydes Yard in Kingston-Upon-Hull. ''Tweed'' was commissioned in April 1759 under Captain William Paston. On 15 March 1761 ''Tweed'' captured the French privateer ''Hardi'', off Cape Finisterre. ''Hardi'', of Bayonne, was armed with 10 guns and had a crew of 125 men. She had been out 18 days but had not captured anything. ''Tweed'' took ''Hardi'' into Lisbon. In 1763 command passed to Captain Charles Douglas until ''Tweed'' paid off into reserve in April 1765. In November 1766 she was recommissioned under Captain Thomas Collingwood. Sir Thomas Slade
Sir Thomas Slade (1703/4–1771) was an English naval architect, most famous for designing HMS ''Victory'', Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Early life He was the son of Arthur Slade (1682–1746) and his wife Hannah Moore. His paternal uncle was Benjamin Slade, Master Shipwright at Deptford Dockyard. George Collier
Vice Admiral Sir George Collier (11 May 1732 – 6 April 1795) was an officer of the Royal Navy who saw service during the Seven Years' War, the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary Wars. As commander of the fourth-rate ship , he was one of the most successful British naval commanders during the opening stages of war with America. He achieved considerable success as one of the senior officers on the North American coast, conducting and organizing several highly effective raids and counter-strikes. He was superseded however, and returned to Britain to play a role in the closing events of the war in European waters, before moving ashore to start a political career. Sir Charles Douglas, 1st Baronet
Rear Admiral Sir Charles Douglas, 1st Baronet (1727 – 17 March 1789) was a descendant of the Earls of Morton and a distinguished British naval officer. He is particularly known for his part in the Battle of the Saintes during the American War of Independence where he helped pioneer the tactic of "breaking the line". Blaydes Yard
Blaydes' Yard was a private shipbuilder in Kingston upon Hull, England, founded in the 18th century which fulfilled multiple Royal Navy contracts. Her most notable ship was HMS Bounty, HMS ''Bounty'' famed for its mutiny. History Hugh Blaydes was born in 1686 and started building ships with his sons in 1740. Their yard was at Hessle Cliff on the Humber Estuary on the edge of Kingston upon Hull. They had a second North End Yard close to their home at 6 High Street (now known as Blaydes House). HMS ''Tartar'' was a 28-gun sixth-rate sailing frigate, frigate of the Royal Navy. Naval career ''Tartar'' was designed by Sir Thomas Slade and based on of 1748, "with such alterations as may tend to the better stowing of men and carrying for guns." Sixth Rate
In the rating system of the Royal Navy used to categorise sailing warships, a sixth-rate was the designation for small warships mounting between 20 and 28 carriage-mounted guns on a single deck, sometimes with smaller guns on the upper works and sometimes without. It thus encompassed ships with up to 30 guns in all. In the first half of the 18th century the main battery guns were 6-pounders, but by mid-century these were supplanted by 9-pounders. 28-gun sixth rates were classed as frigates, those smaller as 'post ships', indicating that they were still commanded by a full ('post') captain, as opposed to sloops of 18 guns and less under commanders.
