HMS Pylades (J401)
HMS ''Pylades'' was a of the Royal Navy. The ''Catherine'' class was the British designation for the United States Navy's Auk class minesweeper. She was sunk on 8 July 1944 off Juno Beach during the Normandy landings. The crew reported two explosions astern, following which the ship sank. The captain's report stated that the damage was most likely caused by two mines. A survey of the wreck as part of Channel 4's ''Wreck Detectives'' underwater archaeological TV series indicated that the damage was actually caused by torpedo attack. In Greek mythology, Pylades (; Ancient Greek: Πυλάδης) was a Phocian prince as the son of King Strophius and Anaxibia who is the daughter of Atreus and sister of Agamemnon and Menelaus. He is mostly known for his relationship with his cousin Orestes, son of Agamemnon. Mythology Orestes and Pylades Orestes had been sent to Phocis during his mother Clytemnestra's affair with Aegisthus. There he was raised with Pylades, and so considered him to be his closest friend. Auk Class Minesweeper
The ''Auk'' class were a class of minesweepers serving with the United States Navy and the Royal Navy during the Second World War. In total, there were 93 ''Auk''s built. Design and development Prior to the United States entering World War II, they had produced two ships of the for testing and evaluation. From these two examples it was decided that the use of Diesel-electric engines to power the ship and the minesweeping equipment, rather than separate geared diesel engines to propel the ship and diesel generators to energize the minesweeping equipment, would work better. The Royal Navy placed an order for 32 of these minesweepers from the United States, ''BAM-1''-''BAM-32''. Juno Beach
Juno or Juno Beach was one of five beaches of the Allied invasion of German-occupied France in the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944 during the Second World War. The beach spanned from Courseulles, a village just east of the British beach Gold, to Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer, and just west of the British beach Sword. Neger (torpedo)
The (German for ''Negro'') was a torpedo-carrying craft generally described as a human torpedo which could not submerge, but was difficult to see during night operations. The vessel was used by Nazi Germany's ''Kriegsmarine'' between 1943 and 1945. The name comes from its constructor, Richard Mohr, whose surname in German also means "Moor" or "Negro."
