HMS ''Dreadnought'' was a 64-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched at Blackwall Yard Blackwall Yard is a small body of water that used to be a shipyard on the River Thames in Blackwall, engaged in ship building and later ship repairs for over 350 years. ''Dreadnought'' was rebuilt at Blackwall in 1706 as a fourth rate of 60 guns. She was enlarged in 1722, and converted into a hulk in 1740. She continued to serve in this role until 1748, when she was broken up. She was captained from 1716 to 1718 by Sir Tancred Robinson. Blackwall Yard
Blackwall Yard is a small body of water that used to be a shipyard on the River Thames in Blackwall, engaged in ship building and later ship repairs for over 350 years. The yard closed in 1987. History East India Company Blackwall was a shipbuilding area since the Middle Ages. In 1607, the Honorable East India Company (HEIC) decided to build its own ships and leased a yard in Deptford. Initially, this change of policy proved profitable as the first ships cost the Company about £10 per ton instead of the £45 per ton that it had been paying to have ships built for it. However, the situation changed as the Deptford yard came to be expensive to run. In 1614 the East India Company outgrew Deptford and ordered William Burrell to begin work on a new yard for repair, construction and loading of out-going ships. In the rating system of the Royal Navy, a third rate was a ship of the line which from the 1720s mounted between 64 and 80 guns, typically built with two gun decks (thus the related term two-decker). Years of experience proved that the third rate ships embodied the best compromise between sailing ability (speed, handling), firepower, and cost. So, while first-rates and second-rates were both larger and more powerful, third-rate ships were the optimal configuration. In 1603 all English warships with a compliment of fewer than 160 men were known as 'small ships'. Sir Tancred Robinson, 3rd Baronet
Sir Tancred Robinson, 3rd Baronet (c. 1685 – 2 September 1754) was an English Rear admiral and Lord Mayor of York. Life He was the second son of Sir William Robinson, 1st Baronet of Newby, Yorkshire and succeeded his elder brother Metcalfe to the baronetcy and Newby Park in 1741. He joined the Royal Navy, was knighted and made commanding officer of HMS ''Solebay'' (1707) and ''Gosport'' (1708). After promotion to captain he successively commanded HMS ''Deptford'' (1710), ''Winchester'' (1712–14), ''Dreadnought'' (1716–18) and ''Britannia'' (1734–36). In 1736 he was made Rear-Admiral of the Blue Squadron and in 1739 Rear-Admiral of the White. He retired from the Navy in 1741. Robinson was elected Lord Mayor of York in 1718 and again 1738.
