HMS Diligence (F174)
A number of ships of the Royal Navy have borne the name HMS ''Diligence''. * was an eight-gun sloop built in 1756, renamed ''Comet'' and converted to a fireship in 1779, but sold that year. * was an 18-gun brig sloop. Originally HMS ''Spencer'', she was renamed HMS ''Diligence'' before being launched in 1795. She was lost in 1800. * was the former mercantile ''Union'', purchased in 1801 and sold in 1812. * was part of Inglefield’s 1854 Arctic expedition. *HMS ''Diligence'' was a 17-gun laid down in 1861 but cancelled on 12 December 1863. * was a destroyer depot ship, formerly the civilian ''Tabaristan'', purchased in October 1915. The Royal Navy (RN) is the United Kingdom's naval warfare force. Edward Augustus Inglefield
Sir Edward Augustus Inglefield (27 March 1820 â€“ 4 September 1894) was a Royal Navy officer who led one of the searches for the missing Arctic explorer John Franklin during the 1850s. In doing so, his expedition charted previously unexplored areas along the northern Canadian coastline, including Baffin Bay, Smith Sound and Lancaster Sound. Hythe () is a town near Southampton, Hampshire, England. It is located by the shore of Southampton Water, and has a ferry service connecting it to Southampton. Hythe has a small shopping area, a pier, and a marina for yachts. History The name Hythe means landing-place or haven. Hythe is recorded in a Parliamentary roll from 1293.squadron. Hythe was a village up to the 1950s, but the expansion of Fawley Refinery led to a demand for more houses for workers, and Hythe and Dibden Purlieu were allowed to expand into a small town. Royal Fleet Auxiliary
The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) is a naval auxiliary fleet owned by the UK's Ministry of Defence. It provides logistical and operational support to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. The RFA ensures the Royal Navy is supplied and supported by providing fuel and stores through replenishment at sea, transporting Royal Marines and British Army personnel, providing medical care and transporting equipment and essentials around the world. In addition the RFA acts independently providing humanitarian aid, counter piracy and counter narcotic patrols together with assisting the Royal Navy in preventing conflict and securing international trade. They are a uniformed civilian branch of the Royal Navy staffed by British merchant sailors.
