HMS Crescent (1779)
HMS ''Crescent'' was a 28-gun ''Enterprise''-class sixth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy. ''Crescent'' was launched in 1779. The French captured her in 1781. She was wrecked in 1786. British service ''Crescent'' was first commissioned in about September 1779 under the command of Captain Charles Hope. On 2 October 1779, captured two French cutters, ''Mutin'' and , each of 14 guns and 120 men. The Royal Navy took both into service essentially under their existing names. ''Jupiter'' shared the prize money with ''Apollo'', ''Crescent'', and . HMS ''Glory'' was a 32-gun fifth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy, and was the second Royal Navy ship to bear this name.Winfield 2007, p. 198 Career HMS ''Glory'' was ordered during the Seven Years' War, but completed too late for that conflict. Striking the colors—meaning lowering the flag (the "colors") that signifies a ship's or garrison's allegiance—is a universally recognized indication of surrender, particularly for ships at sea. For a ship, surrender is dated from the time the ensign is struck. In international law "Colours. A national flag (or a battle ensign). The colours . . . are hauled down as a token of submission." International law absolutely requires a ship of war to fly its ensign at the commencement of any hostile acts, i.e., before firing on the enemy. The action of 30 May 1781 was a naval battle fought between two frigates of the Royal Navy and two of the Dutch Republic off the Barbary Coast. In the Netherlands it is known as the ''zeegevecht bij Kaap Sint-Marie'' (sea battle of Cape St Mary, after the Cabo de Santa Maria). A bomb vessel, bomb ship, bomb ketch, or simply bomb was a type of wooden sailing naval ship. Its primary armament was not cannons ( long guns or carronades) – although bomb vessels carried a few cannons for self-defence – but mortars mounted forward near the bow and elevated to a high angle, and projecting their fire in a ballistic arc. Explosive shells (also called ''bombs'' at the time) or carcasses were employed rather than solid shot. Xebec
A xebec ( or ), also spelled zebec, was a Mediterranean sailing ship that was used mostly for trading. Xebecs had a long overhanging bowsprit and aft-set mizzen mast. The term can also refer to a small, fast vessel of the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, used almost exclusively in the Mediterranean Sea. Description Xebecs were ships similar to galleys primarily used by Barbary pirates, which have both lateen sails and oars for propulsion. Early xebecs had two masts while later ships had three. Seventy-four (ship)
The "seventy-four" was a type of two- decked sailing ship of the line, which nominally carried 74 guns. It was developed by the French navy in the 1740s, replacing earlier classes of 60- and 62-gun ships, as a larger complement to the recently-developed 64-gun ships. Impressed with the performance of several captured French seventy-fours, the British Royal Navy quickly adopted similar designs, classing them as third rates. The action of 1 May 1781 was a naval engagement nearly 210 miles off the Port of Brest in which , a 74-gun third rate of the Royal Navy under Captain George Collier chased, intercepted and captured the 40-gun Spanish frigate ''Santa Leocadia'', captained by Don Francisco Wenthuisen. Battle On 30 April, the 74-gun ship HMS ''Canada'', Captain Sir George Collier, having been detached by Vice-Admiral George Darby, commander-in-chief of the Channel Fleet, to watch the port of Brest, discovered a squadron of small ships. The squadron dispersed on her approach, upon which ''Canada'' chased the largest, the ''Santa Leocadia''. After a pursuit of , the ''Canada'' overtook the ''Santa Leocadia'' on the morning of 1 May.
