HMCS York
HMCS ''York'' is a Royal Canadian Navy Reserve Division (NRD) located in Toronto, Ontario. Dubbed a stone frigate, HMCS ''York'' is a land-based naval establishment for part-time sailors as well as a local recruitment centre for the Canadian Naval Reserve. History The unit was established in 1942 to replace the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve Half Company created in 1923. During World War II, it was a premiere naval recruiting depot in the British Commonwealth through which over 17,000 personnel passed during the years of the war. HMCS ''York'' was named after the original name of the city of Toronto and the first British commercial craft on Lake Ontario. ''York'' is home to the Canadian Forces Sailing Association's Toronto establishment. Athletics During the Second World War, Toronto HMCS ''York'' fielded a football team in the Ontario Rugby Football Union (ORFU). Royal Canadian Legion
The Royal Canadian Legion is a non-profit Canadian ex-service organization (veterans' organization) founded in 1925. Membership includes people who have served as military, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, provincial and municipal police, Royal Canadian Air, Army and Sea Cadets, direct relatives of members and also affiliated members. Membership is now also open to the general public. History In Canada, several veterans' organisations emerged during the First World War. The Great War Veterans Association was by 1919 the largest veterans' organisation in Canada. Following the First World War, 15 different organisations existed to aid returning veterans in Canada. Royal Canadian Air Cadets
The Royal Canadian Air Cadets (french: Cadets de l'Aviation royale du Canada) is a Canadian national youth program for young individuals aged 12 to 18. Under the authority of the National Defence Act, the program is administered by the Canadian Forces (CF) and funded through the Department of National Defence (DND). Additional support is provided by the civilian Air Cadet League of Canada (ACL). Together with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and Royal Canadian Army Cadets, it forms the "largest federally funded youth program in the country". Cadets are not members of the military and are not obliged to join the Canadian Forces. The first squadrons were established in 1941 to train young men for duties during World War II. Today the focus is on general aviation within the aim: "To instill in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership; promote physical fitness; and stimulate an interest in the activities of the Canadian Forces."
