HiM (band)
HiM is a dub influenced post-rock group formed in 1995 by Doug Scharin, drummer for the bands Codeine, Rex and June of 44. Their first album, ''Egg'', was their most dub-based effort. Each successive album has gone more in a quasi- world music direction. After some recording for ''Crooklyn Dub Consortium'' and Wordsound, ''Interpretive Belief System'', HiM settled on a lineup of Scharin with Bundy K. Brown, Rob Mazurek and Jeff Parker, members or occasional members of Tortoise and Isotope 217. Their first album was the underground hit ''Sworn Eyes'', produced by Doug Scharin. A few personnel changes followed, and the revamped lineup including members of June of 44. HiM released ''Our Point of Departure'' in 1999, which signified a very clear shift toward a more jazz-like sound, followed by a major American and European tour. Dub Music
Dub is an electronic musical style that grew out of reggae in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Published 10 times a year, it was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1970 by Ira Sabin as the newsletter ''Radio Free Jazz'' to complement his record store. Founded 1992 by John Loder, Southern Records is an independent record label (Loder also ran the recording facility Southern Studios). It is based in London and until 2008 had offices in the United States, France and Berlin. The label is closely associated with Crass Records, Corpus Christi Records and Dischord Records. Loder became friends with musician Penny Rimbaud and collaborated with him in an experimental band called EXIT. Mice Parade is an American shoegaze band from New York City, led by percussionist Adam Pierce. ''Mice Parade'' is an anagram of Pierce's name. Biography Adam Pierce started Mice Parade as a solo project while he also played in groups including The Philistines Jr., Boston indie band Swirlies, and post-rock group HiM. Mice Parade's albums were initially released on Pierce's own Bubble Core Records, with subsequent records being released on FatCat. Antibalas (Spanish for "bulletproof") is an American, Brooklyn-based afrobeat band that is modeled after Fela Kuti's Africa 70 band and Eddie Palmieri's Harlem River Drive Orchestra. Although their music generally follows the musical architecture and language of afrobeat, it incorporates elements of jazz, funk, dub, improvised music, and traditional drumming from Cuba and West Africa.
