HD 75898
HD 75898 is an 8th magnitude star approximately 255 light years away in the constellation Lynx. The star is 28% more massive, 60% larger, and 3 times as luminous than our local star. It is a metal-rich star, with 186% the solar abundance of iron. In 2007 the California and Carnegie Planet Search team found one planet orbiting HD 75898. In 2019 the HD 75898 system was chosen as part of the NameExoWorlds campaign organised by the International Astronomical Union, which assigned each country a star and planet to be named. HD 75898 was assigned to Croatia. The winning proposal named the star Stribor, after the god of winds in Slavic mythology, and the planet Veles, after a deity of earth, water and the underworld in Slavic mythology. ''Hipparcos'' was a scientific satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA), launched in 1989 and operated until 1993. It was the first space experiment devoted to precision astrometry, the accurate measurement of the positions of celestial objects on the sky. This permitted the first high-precision measurements of the intrinsic brightnesses (compared to the less precise apparent brightness), proper motions, and parallaxes of stars, enabling better calculations of their distance and tangential velocity. When combined with radial velocity measurements from spectroscopy, astrophysicists were able to finally measure all six quantities needed to determine the motion of stars. The resulting ''Hipparcos Catalogue'', a high-precision catalogue of more than 118,200 stars, was published in 1997. HD 5319
HD 5319 is an 8th magnitude star approximately 319 light years away in the constellation Cetus. It is a subgiant star of spectral type K3, having run out of hydrogen in its core. When it was main-sequence, the spectral type was early F or late A. The absolute magnitude (apparent magnitude at 10 parsecs) is 3.05, which would translate to easy naked eye visibility, but its distance is ten times greater, so its apparent magnitude is 8.05 (100 times fainter than its absolute magnitude), it is not visible to the naked eye and binoculars are needed. Planetary system On January 11, 2007, the California and Carnegie Planet Search team found an extrasolar planet with a minimum mass 1.76 times that of Jupiter orbiting the star. Doppler spectroscopy (also known as the radial-velocity method, or colloquially, the wobble method) is an indirect method for finding extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs from radial-velocity measurements via observation of Doppler shifts in the spectrum of the planet's parent star. 1,018 extrasolar planets (about 19.5% of the total) have been discovered using Doppler spectroscopy, as of November 2022. History Otto Struve proposed in 1952 the use of powerful spectrographs to detect distant planets. NameExoWorlds
NameExoWorlds (also known as IAU NameExoWorlds) is the name of various projects managed by the International Astronomical Union (I.A.U.) to encourage names to be submitted for astronomical objects, which would later be considered for official adoption by the organization. History The first such project (NameExoWorlds I), in 2015, regarded the naming of stars and exoplanets. 573,242 votes were submitted by members by the time the contest closed on October 31, 2015, and the names of 31 exoplanets and 14 stars were selected from these. Many of the names chosen were based on world history, mythology and literature. In June 2019, another such project (NameExoWorlds II), in celebration of the organization's hundredth anniversary, in a project officially called IAU100 NameExoWorlds, welcomed countries of the world to submit names for exoplanets and their host stars.
