H. W. Ambruster
Howard Watson Ambruster (1879 – January 10, 1961) was an American football coach, chemical engineer, actor, and lecturer. He was the head football coach at Rutgers University for one season, in 1895, compiling a record of 3–4. Armbruster also played tennis and competed in the 1899 Pennsylvania Lawn Tennis Championships. Ambruster attended Germantown Academy. He entered the University of Pennsylvania with class of 1899, but left the school before graduating to coach football at Rutgers. A longtime resident of Westfield, New Jersey, he moved to Fanwood, New Jersey Fanwood is a borough in Union County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 7,774, an increase of 456 (+6.2%) from the 2010 census count of 7,318, which in turn reflected an increa ... in 1949, and died at his home there at the age of 82, on January 10, 1961. Fanwood is a borough in Union County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 7,774, an increase of 456 (+6.2%) from the 2010 census count of 7,318, which in turn reflected an increase of 144 (+2.0%) from the 7,174 counted in the 2000 census. 1895 College Football Season
The 1895 college football season was the season of American football played among colleges and universities in the United States during the 1895–96 academic year. The 1895 Penn Quakers football team, led by head coach George Washington Woodruff, compiled a perfect 14–0 record and is recognized as the 1895 national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, and National Championship Foundation. One selector, Parke H. Davis, recognized both Penn and Yale as co-national champions. Yale compiled a 13–0–2 record. In the Midwest, Michigan led the way with an 8–1 record, the only loss coming in a road game against Harvard. In the South, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association played its first year of college football with Vanderbilt winning the first conference championship. The 1895 Rutgers Queensmen football team represented Rutgers University as an independent during the 1895 college football season. William Ayres Reynolds coached the first two games, going 0-2. When Reynolds left to coach the Sewanee team, Rutgers completed their season under head coach H. W. Ambruster, the Queensmen compiling an overall 3–4 record and were outscored by their opponents, 131 to 98. The team captain was William A. Ranney.
