H. Sharif Williams
Hameed Sharif "Herukhuti" Williams is an American cultural studies scholar whose work focuses on sex research and education. He is also a systems theorist, culture and interdisciplinary social scientist, journalist and public speaker who has written about and lectured on bisexuality particularly among people of African descent. Early life and education Williams was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, with a heritage steeped in the black radical and socialist traditions. His maternal great-grandmother was Garveyite, a member of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, and active in the Moorish Science Temple. His maternal grandparents were members of the American Labor Party (ALP), and his parents were members of both the Black Panther Party and later the Sunni Muslim community. Cultural Studies
Cultural studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines the political dynamics of contemporary culture (including popular culture) and its historical foundations. Cultural studies researchers generally investigate how cultural practices relate to wider systems of power associated with, or operating through, social phenomena. These include ideology, class structures, national formations, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and generation. Brenda Howard Award
The Brenda Howard Memorial Award is an award for activism created in 2005 by the Queens Chapter of PFLAG and named after Brenda Howard. It was the first award by a major American LGBT organization to be named after an openly bisexual person.
