H. G. S. Bandara
H. G. S. Bandara ( si, H. G. S. බණ්ඩාර, died 17 May 2009) was a soldier in the Sri Lanka Army. He was killed in a battle against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (commonly known as LTTE or Tamil Tigers), two days before the civil war ended. He received the Parama Weera Vibhushanaya, the country's highest military award for gallantry, three years later for his actions during that battle. Action on 17 May 2009 By 16 May 2009, the Sri Lankan Civil War was nearing its end, with the government military assault having confined and surrounded the remnants of the Tamil Tigers to an area of approximately around the Nanthikadal lagoon in north-eastern Sri Lanka. The army expected the Tamil Tigers to attempt to break through their lines, and had stationed several small groups around the lagoon. Nanthikadal
Nanthi Kadal ( ta, நந்திக்கடல் Nantikkaṭal) is a lagoon in Mullaitivu District, north-east Sri Lanka. The English translation of Nanthi Kadal is "the sea of conches". The lagoon is fed by a number of small rivers, including Per Aru. The town of Mullaitivu is located on land sandwiched between Nanthi Kadal and the Indian Ocean. As such Nanthi Kadal is sometimes referred to as Mullaitivu lagoon. Staff sergeant is a rank of non-commissioned officer used in the armed forces of many countries. It is also a police rank in some police services. Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment
The Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment of the Sri Lankan Army. Formed on 22 March 1988, it is named after Vijayabahu I of Polonnaruwa (King Vijayabahu, 1055 to 1110 AD). The regiment consists of 17 regular battalions, 9 volunteer battalions and a headquarters battalion. Since 1993, its Regimental Centre is located at the Boyagane Camp, Kurunegala. History Originally formed in 1982 and disbanded in 1983 follow its amalgamated with the 1st Battalion, Rajarata Rifles form the Gajaba Regiment, the regiment was reformed on 22 March 1990. The first colonel of the regiment was W. J. V. K Wimalarathna. The regimental centre commandant was H. S. A. Perera. __NOTOC__ The Parama Weera Vibhushanaya (PWV) ( Sinhala: පරම වීර වීභූෂණය ''parama vīra vibhūṣaṇaya''; Tamil: பரம வீர விபுஷனைய) is Sri Lanka's highest military decoration, awarded for acts of exceptional valour in wartime.
