H. G. Landau
Hyman Garshin Landau (December 18, 1909 – December 2, 1966), more often known as H. G. Landau, was an American mathematical biologist, statistician and sociologist who is known for using mathematical methods such as graph theory to understand animal behavior and social dynamics. After receiving his doctorate in statistics from the University of Pittsburgh, he worked at the Ballistic Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, while teaching part-time at the University of Delaware. He carried out his seminal work on graph tournaments as a research associate at the University of Chicago. Chmielnik, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship
Chmielnik is a town in Kielce County, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, Poland. As of December 2021, it has a population of 3,557, and lies in historic Lesser Poland. The name of the town is derived from hops, hop ( pl, chmiel). History Chmielnik was first mentioned in connection with the Battle of Chmielnik with Mongols and Tatars fought in the area in 1241 (see First Mongol invasion of Poland, Mongol invasion of Poland). The Mongols and the Tatars were opposed near the settlement by Polish knights from the provinces of Duchy of Sandomierz, Sandomierz and Seniorate Province, Kraków. In the town there is a monument dedicated to this battle. At the beginning the settlement was a property of the dukes of Sandomierz, but in the 13th century it became owned by the Odrowąż family. The oldest monument in the town is the Church of Holy Trinity together with a church graveyard from around 1356. The House Committee on Un-American Activities (HCUA), popularly dubbed the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), was an investigative committee of the United States House of Representatives, created in 1938 to investigate alleged disloyalty and subversive activities on the part of private citizens, public employees, and those organizations suspected of having either fascist or communist ties. It became a standing (permanent) committee in 1945, and from 1969 onwards it was known as the House Committee on Internal Security. When the House abolished the committee in 1975, its functions were transferred to the House Judiciary Committee. The committee's anti-communist investigations are often associated with McCarthyism, although Joseph McCarthy himself (as a U.S. Senator) had no direct involvement with the House committee. Tournament (graph Theory)
A tournament is a directed graph (digraph) obtained by assigning a direction for each edge in an undirected complete graph. That is, it is an orientation of a complete graph, or equivalently a directed graph in which every pair of distinct vertices is connected by a directed edge (often, called an arc) with any one of the two possible orientations. Many of the important properties of tournaments were first investigated by H. G. Landau in to model dominance relations in flocks of chickens. Current applications of tournaments include the study of voting theory and social choice theory among other things. The name ''tournament'' originates from such a graph's interpretation as the outcome of a round-robin tournament in which every player encounters every other player exactly once, and in which no draws occur.
