H. C. Prange Co.
H. C. Prange Co., sometimes shortened to Prange's, was an American department store chain begun by H. C. Prange in 1887 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. At its peak, it operated stores in the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. It also operated discount stores under the Prange Way name in the former two states, although this division was sold off in the 1990s. Prange's was dissolved and most of the stores converted to the rival Younkers chain after sale in 1992. History Founding Henry Carl Prange was the son of farmers who had immigrated to Wisconsin from Germany following the Revolutions of 1848. In 1876, he began working at John Plath's general store in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, as a clerk, janitor, and delivery boy. In 1887, he attempted to purchase a share of his employer's store; after this proved unsuccessful, he founded his own store on October 4, 1887 with his sister Eliza, and brother-in-law, J. H. Bitter. Sheboygan () is a city in and the county seat of Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 49,929 at the 2020 census. It is the principal city of the Sheboygan, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 118,034. The Boston Store Inc. is an online retailer and former department store chain owned by The Bon-Ton stores. It was founded in 1897 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. History 1920s and 1930s Throughout the 1920s, and 1930s the Boston Store was run by Philip Irving Stone. His nephew, Irving Stone, worked as a manager and, beginning in 1927, dated Broadway ingenue and later MGM movie star Jeanette MacDonald for a time. Forest Mall was an enclosed shopping mall in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, USA. Opened in 1973, the mall closed and was demolished in 2020. As of April 2023, The Former Pranges/Younkers building is still standing and Kohl’s and TJ Maxx continue operations History Melvin Simon & Associates, now known as Simon Property Group, first announced plans for Forest Mall in 1964. The mall opened in September 1973, featuring Montgomery Ward, J. C. Penney, H. C. Prange Co., Prange Way and G. C. Murphy. A Copps Department Store was also located nearby. Of these stores, Montgomery Ward, J. C. Penney and Prange had relocated from downtown Fond du Lac. The Montgomery Ward space was later taken over by Kohl's, the Prange Way space by Sears and Prange's became Younkers. Simon renovated the mall in 1998, adding skylights and new flooring. A bargain bin refers to an assorted selection of merchandise, particularly software, tools and CDs, which have been discounted in price. Reasons for the discount can range from the closure of a production company to a steep decline in an item's popularity in the aftermath of a fad or scandal. Another reason for the discount can be the particular product line being discontinued. The origin of the term comes from the fact such items would be found in an isolated bin rather than on store shelves. The phrase "bargain basement" is now a synonym.
