H.G.S. Gray
Hugh Grainger Stewart Gray (10 August 1875 – 1955) was a Scottish player on the 1899 British Isles tour to Australia (often referred to as the England team). He was never capped for , but had appeared in the Scottish Trials. In 1899, Gray was invited to represent the British Isles on the team's first official tour to Australia. After the tourists lost the First Test, captain Matthew Mullineux made several team changes, and Alf Bucher was replaced by Gray, a trialist who normally played as a forward. Despite a comprehensive win in the Second Test, Gray was dropped for the Third Test and Boucher was back on the wing. He normally played as a forward, but went on the wing for one of his games against Australia. Rugby Union Positions
In the game of rugby union, there are 15 players on each team, comprising eight forwards (wearing jerseys numbered 1–8) and seven backs (numbered 9–15). In addition, there may be up to eight replacement players "on the bench", numbered 16–23. Players are not restricted to a single position, although they generally specialise in just one or two that suit their skills and body types. Players that play multiple positions are called "utility players". Forwards compete for the ball in scrums and line-outs and are generally bigger and stronger than the backs. Coventry RFC
Coventry Rugby Football Club is a professional rugby union club based in Coventry, England. The club enjoyed great success during the 1960s and 70s, with many players representing their countries. Coventry's home ground is the Butts Park Arena, which opened in 2004. Between 1921 and 2004, the club played at Coundon Road. The British & Irish Lions is a rugby union team selected from players eligible for the national teams of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The Lions are a test side and most often select players who have already played for their national team, although they can pick uncapped players who are eligible for any of the four unions. The team currently tours every four years, with these rotating between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in order. 1899 British Lions Tour To Australia
The 1899 British Isles tour to Australia was the fourth rugby union tour by a British Isles team and the second to Australia; though the first tour in 1888 was a private venture, making the 1899 tour the first official undertaking of Australia. It is retrospectively classed as one of the British Lions tours, as the Lions naming convention was not adopted until 1950. Negotiations had also taken place for the tour to incorporate matches against New Zealand, either through a visit to New Zealand, or a New Zealand team to play in Australia. No agreeable terms could be found. This tour was the first to truly represent the British Isles, with players from all four Home Nations. Matthew Mullineux
Matthew Mullineux MC (8 August 1867 – 13 February 1945) was an English rugby union scrum-half who, although not capped for England, was selected for two British Lions tours. He gained one cap during the 1896 tour to South Africa and captained the 1899 tour of Australia. An Anglican minister, he later became a chaplain in the British Army, and was awarded the Military Cross for his actions during the First World War. Early life Mullineux was born in Barton-upon-Irwell, Eccles, Lancashire, though some sources record his birthplace as nearby Worsley, to Matthew Mullineux, an insurance-inspector, and his wife, Elizabeth (Derbyshire) Mullineux. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and then Matriculated to St John's College, Cambridge. He earned his BA in 1896, and the next year was ordained as a Deacon at Southwark Cathedral. Alfred "Alf" Moore Bucher (22 March 1874 – 20 August 1939) was a Scotland, Scottish international rugby union wing who played club rugby for Edinburgh Academicals RFC, Edinburgh Academicals. Coventry ( or ) is a city in the West Midlands, England. It is on the River Sherbourne.
