Güero (restaurant)
Güero is a restaurant serving Mexican cuisine in Portland, Oregon's Kerns neighborhood, in the United States. The restaurant specializes in tortas. The restaurant opened in February 2017 and was named "Portland's 2017 Rising Star restaurant" by ''The Oregonian'' contributor Ben Waterhouse. The ''Portland Mercury'' included Güero in a 2019 overview of the city's 50 "best multi-cultural restaurants and food carts". Mexican cuisine consists of the cooking cuisines and traditions of the modern country of Mexico. Its earliest roots lie in Mesoamerican cuisine. Its ingredients and methods begin with the first agricultural communities such as the Olmec and Maya who domesticated maize, created the standard process of maize nixtamalization, and established their foodways. Successive waves of other Mesoamerican groups brought with them their own cooking methods. The ''Zagat Survey'', commonly referred to as Zagat (stylized in all caps; , ) and established by Tim and Nina Zagat in 1979, is an organization which collects and correlates the ratings of restaurants by diners. For their first guide, covering New York City, the Zagats surveyed their friends. Lonely Planet is a travel guide book publisher. Founded in Australia in 1973, the company has printed over 150 million books. History Early years Lonely Planet was founded by married couple Maureen and Tony Wheeler. In 1972, they embarked on an overland trip through Europe and Asia to Australia, following the route of the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition. The company name originates from the misheard "lovely planet" in a song written by Matthew Moore.
