Gwalia, Western Australia
Gwalia is a former gold-mining town located north of Kalgoorlie and east of Perth in Western Australia's Great Victoria Desert. Today, Gwalia is essentially a ghost town, having been largely deserted since the main source of employment, the Sons of Gwalia gold mine, closed in 1963. Just north is the town of Leonora, which remains the hub for the area's mining and pastoral industries. History The Wongatha people are the traditional owners and inhabitants of Gwalia. Marvel Loch, Western Australia
Marvel Loch is a small townsite of fewer than 100 people, east of Perth, Western Australia. It is located south west of Southern Cross, along the Perth to Kalgoorlie Great Eastern Highway. The town is located in the Shire of Yilgarn. Gold was discovered in the area in the early 1890s. In 1906 following gold mining leases being issued to Markham, Doolette, Leneberg and Le Breton, who named their lease Marvel Loch. The town is named after the horse that won the Caulfield Cup in 1905. The town lies between the mine and another minesite, and the current location was surveyed in 1909 and the town was gazetted in 1911. The Marvel Loch Progress Association was formed in 1909 to help get a School established in the area, which was built by the Association in around 1910 out of Lime Wash Hession Walls with Bush Poles and an Iron Roof. Marvel Loch Gold Mine
The Marvel Loch Gold Mine is a gold mine located at Marvel Loch, south of Southern Cross, Western Australia. It is operated by St Barbara Limited. Apart from Marvel Loch, St Barbara also operated the Gwalia Gold Mine at Leonora and owned the Tarmoola Gold Mine, which was placed in care and maintenance. All three mines were previously owned by the now defunct mining company Sons of Gwalia Limited. Sons of Gwalia went into administration on 30 August 2004 and the company's gold mining operations were sold to St Barbara in March 2005 for A$38 million, having been valued by the Sons of Gwalia directors at A$120 million. While Marvel Loch was operational before and after the sale, the Gwalia mine was already placed in care and maintenance at the time of the transaction. Care and maintenance is a term used in the mining industry to describe processes and conditions on a closed minesite where there is potential to recommence operations at a later date. During a care and maintenance phase, production is stopped but the site is managed to ensure it remains in a safe and stable condition. Causes The mine might be considered to be temporarily unviable, due to current economic conditions or unfavourable resource prices, which are expected to improve at a later date. PacMin (Pacific Miniatures) is a manufacturer of model aircraft. History PacMin was founded in 1946 by two employees of Douglas Aircraft Company. The purpose was to create models for people to see the interior of aircraft in order to get nervous travelers to fly. The company created large cutaway models that became mainstays for travel agencies. PacMin began creating smaller models scaled to one hundredth of the aircraft size which became what the company was known for. In 1986 it was purchased by Fred Ouweleen.
