Gurbanmuhammet Kasymow
Gurbanmuhammet Kasymow (30 July 1954 – 2 September 2021) was a Turkmen politician, lawyer, and diplomat. He headed several government ministries under former President of Turkmenistan Saparmyrat Nyýazow, including Minister of Internal Affairs from 1993 to 1998, Minister of Defense from 1998 to 1999, and Minister of Justice from 1999 until 2001. Kasymow was one of the few former Turkmen government ministers who was not arrested or persecuted by Turkmenistan's presidents after leaving office. He later served as Ambassador to China from 2001 to 2008 and Ambassador to Kazakhstan from 2008 until 2009. Biography Kasymow graduated from the Faculty of Law at Turkmen State University in 1976. Saparmyrat Ataýewiç Nyýazow) (; 19 February 1940 – 21 December 2006), also known as , , was a Turkmen politician who ruled Turkmenistan as a dictator from 1985 until his death in 2006. He was first secretary of the Turkmen Communist Party from 1985 until 1991 and supported the 1991 Soviet coup attempt. He continued to rule Turkmenistan for 15 years after independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Turkmen media referred to him using the title, ''His "Excellency Saparmurat Türkmenbaşy, President of Turkmenistan and Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers"''. His self-given title ''Turkmenbashy'', meaning ''Head of the Turkmen'', referred to his position as the founder and president of the Association of Turkmens of the World. COVID-19 Pandemic In Turkmenistan
As of 16 January 2023, Turkmenistan is the only remaining sovereign country in the world that has not reported any cases of COVID-19. There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Turkmenistan with the totalitarian government being proactive in censoring relevant information. It is however suspected to have spread in the country unreported; specifics are difficult to ascertain and confirm in absence of independent media. 2020 developments Travel restrictions On 31 January 2020, Turkmenistan Airlines announced the suspension of flights to Bangkok and Beijing and organised charter flights for Turkmen citizens there. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a contagious disease caused by a virus, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The Ministry of Internal Affairs ( tk, Türkmenistanyň Içeri Işler Ministrligi) is the interior ministry or national police force of Turkmenistan. The ministry directly controls the Turkmen police force, consisting of about 25,000 personnel, and works with the Ministry for National Security on matters of law enforcement and national defense.
