Gunvald Aus, also written Aas (May 30, 1851 – May 27, 1950) was a Norwegian-American engineer. He is most associated with the engineering of the Woolworth Building in New York City. Background He was born the son of Gabriel Godfrey Aas and Sophie Schroeder in Haugesund in the county of Rogaland, Norway. He was educated at the Bergen Technical School (now Norwegian University of Science and Technology (1879). He graduated from the Technical University of Munich (1882). He was then hired in the Norwegian Directorate of Public Roads as an assistant to Road Director Hans Hagerup Krag, but left for the United States in 1883. Initially, he was employed by railroad and highway bridge designer Theodore Cooper. Career Having worked in different companies, including the Phoenix Bridge Company, he was hired as chief engineer in the United States Department of the Treasury. Gunvald Bøe
Gunvald Bøe (1903/1904 – 21 November 1967) was a Norwegian archivist and historian. He was hired in the National Archival Services of Norway in 1947, and was promoted to chief archivist of Eastern Norway (including the country's capital Oslo) in 1960. He was also a co-editor of the biographical dictionary ''Norsk biografisk leksikon'' from 1961 to his death, succeeding Einar Jansen Einar Jansen (27 March 1893 – 13 December 1960) was a Norwegian historian, genealogist and archivist. He was born in Røyken as the son of priest Jens Jonas Jansen (1844–1912) and Jenny Therese Schroeter (1863–1942). He was a nephew of Jens ... when he died. Gunvald Engelstad
Gunvald Engelstad (10 May 1900 – 18 September 1972) was a Norwegian politician for the Labour Party. He was born in Øksendal. After working on a farm from 1915 to 1916, he took a smith's education from 1917 to 1920. He worked as a smith from 1920; at Follafoss Tresliperi from 1925. He was involved in the local trade unions, and was active in politics. He was a member of Verran municipal council from 1925 to 1928, chaired the local party chapter from 1931 to 1934 and later served as mayor from 1934. He was also a member of the local school board, the forestry board and various committees. He lost all his positions following the Nazi German invasion of Norway in 1940, only returning as mayor for some months in 1945. Gunvald Strøm-Walseng
Gunvald Strøm-Walseng (12 December 1889 – 1951) was a Norwegian barrister. He was born in Sande i Vestfold. After his examen artium he attended the Norwegian Military Academy for some time, reaching the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery in 1912. He commenced law studies and graduated with the cand.jur. degree in 1916. After two years as a deputy judge in Lier, Røyken and Hurum District Court he received a lawyer's licence in 1918. He joined the law firm of barrister Harald Wellén, and worked there from 1918 to 1925 before starting his own firm. He was the official town attorney of his new hometown Drammen from 1937, and was a prominent citizen there. He was also a district branch leader in the Norwegian Bar Association. He was a barrister with access to working with Supreme Court cases, and he led several cases which attracted national attention. Gunvald Tomstad
Gunvald Jørg Tomstad (2 August 1918 – 12 May 1970) was a major agent of the British SIS, and a Norwegian resistance member during World War II. From 1941 to 1943, he was a mole or double agent while also operating a clandestine radio transmitter in the Flekkefjord area. These were two of the most dangerous roles in that war. Biography Tomstad was born in Nes, Vest-Agder as a son of a young farmer and journalist. His father died in the influenza pandemic of 1918, so he and his sisters were raised mainly by their maternal grandparents. In addition to working as a farmer, he was a typographer in the newspaper ''Agder'', until the newspaper was closed due to the German occupation of Norway. He was recruited for the British SIS by a group of agents, led by Odd Starheim and despatched by Winston Churchill before he became Prime Minister.
